BACCALAUREATE CORE PROPOSAL CHECKLIST
SKILLS CATEGORY: WRITING I*
Please note: All submissions that deal with WRI and WRII must be routed to the Writing Advisory Board, which
is composed of the Writing Intensive Curriculum Director, the Director of First Year Writing, the Coordinator of
the Writing Center, and a writing faculty member with expertise in technical and professional writing. This Board
will consult with faculty to develop and implement proposals that meet Baccalaureate Core criteria.
Syllabus Checklist (based on OSU Syllabus Minimum Requirement)
Course proposal includes a complete syllabus
Syllabus includes a statement that the course fulfills the Baccalaureate Core requirement for
Writing I.
Course clearly states Baccalaureate Core Category Learning Outcomes and lists them distinctly
from other course outcomes
Course has no limiting prerequisites
Syllabus includes required texts and materials
Syllabus includes grading criteria
Syllabus includes course schedule
Syllabus includes statement regarding students with disabilities
Syllabus includes statement regarding academic or scholarly dishonesty with appropriate URL

Course is at least three credits
Criteria and Outcomes Consideration: After reviewing the syllabus and the Baccalaureate
Core Question set in the Course Proposal System, please make sure all criteria are met
and course includes activities assignments, or measurements aimed at helping students
meet learning outcomes. Note problems or questions on the back of this sheet.
WRITING I Learning Outcomes
Students in Writing I courses shall:
1. Be able to use multiple writing strategies in order to explore, clarify, and effectively
communicate ideas to appropriate audiences.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of language, form, and style.
3. Incorporate critical thinking at all steps in their writing process.
Writing I Rationale and Criteria:
Writing I courses shall:
A. Be lower division and at least 3 credits;
B. Emphasize elements of critical thinking;
C. Focus on the writing process, invention strategies, drafting and revision techniques, and
the forms and conventions of writing;

Emphasize the ability to analyze content and reader response;
Require significant student practice coupled with evaluation;
Encourage appreciation and understanding of language, form and style; and
Develop increasingly sophisticated and efficient writing strategies.
Effective writing is essential both in education and professional pursuits. Furthermore, writing
provides considerable pleasure throughout life as a means of exploring and clarifying ideas and
communicating with others. Writing is challenging as well as rewarding. Effective writing in a
variety of situations requires well planned instruction and continued practice.
