1. Learning to Look by Joshua Taylor $8.75 Used, (MPC Bookstore)
2. ART 1 Course Syllabus by R. Janick, (CD provided with DVD set) MPC Library
DVD SETS: Required
50 sets of DVD’s will be available in the MPC Library to check out for the 8 week course
BEGINNING Monday Feb. 14,2011 at 10:00 am. One set per student. Two sets will be kept on
reserve at the Library.
It is imperative that the DVD sets be returned by Friday April 15, 2011.
1. There are 13 DVD’s and one CD per set.
2. The Library coordinator for DVD set distribution: Phone: 646-3087 is Roseann Irwin.
3. Student will need to show current registration card to checkout videos and sign an agreement to
return DVD set.
4. Fines:
a. $10.00 per day for each damaged DVD in a set
b. $150.00 to replace lost or damaged complete set.
5. Unpaid fines will result in not receiving grades, transcripts or being able to register for
the following semester.

On-line Requirements: Discussion questions
There will be 8 discussion questions posted on the ILEARN site. You must respond to the posted
question and the comments of another student. All students MUST have a VALID E-MAIL address
posted on I-LEARN to participate in Art 1. CONTACT Bruce Wilder at bwilder@mpc.edu to verify your
E-mail address.
Grading Policy for discussion questions:
1. Perfect participation (discussion of all questions) will receive 2 bonus points added to final point
total.
2. For every non-participation of EACH discussion question, 2 points will be subtracted from final
point total
3. There will be 8 discussion questions.
4. Just visiting the site does not count as responding to the question or another student. You must
hit the reply button to post your responses.
FIELD TRIPS: (Mandatory Attendance)
a. There will be 2 field trips.
1. Saturday March 12 , 2011, 11 am – 12:00 noon. The Monterey Museum of Art
559 Pacific Street, Monterey – across from Colton Hall (see Map 1)
2. Saturday, April 9, 2011, 10 am-11:00 pm. The Monterey Sculpture Center, Marina
Airport (see map 2)
b. The two take-home exams will be distributed at the field trips.
c. Attendance cards will be signed at the field trips.
d. Failure to attend the First Field Trip will result in being dropped from the course.
Failure to attend the Second Field Trip will result in an Automatic “F”. (Too late for a
“W” to be assigned.)
EXAMINATIONS:
1. There will be 2 take-home exams worth 50 points each.
2. Each exam will have 25 short answer questions.
3. Students will drop them off in the Red Box (marked ART) in
the Creative Arts Division Office, AS-100, next to GALLERY, West side of Campus,
Hours 8:30-4:30 M-F.
4. Exam 1 – covering Programs 1-12 and distributed March 12, 2011, will be due March 15, 2011.
Exam 2 - covering Programs 13-25 and distributed April 9, 2011, will be due April 12, 2011.
5. Exam questions will be based on material from the text, course syllabus and the DVD’s.
6. Graded exams will be returned to the student via self-addressed, stamped envelopes
provided by the student. No exams will be returned until all exams are received by the
instructor.
7. Failure to turn in Exam No. 2 will result in an automatic F.
8. No makeup exams!
9. Credit/No Credit Option:
You must earn a C grade (59-78) to receive a credit grade if you have signed up for the
Credit/No Credit option. Deadline for selecting this option is Feb. 22, 2011 in the Admissions
and Records Office.
10. Grading Scale:
89-100 Points - A
79-88 Points - B
59-78 Points - C
50-58 Points - D
0-49 Points - F
Other Important Dates:
1. Last day to drop class with a “W” is March 25, 2011.
2. After, March 25th, only a letter grade can be assigned. If you disappear you will
receive an “F.”
3. The student is responsible for notifying Admissions and Records of withdrawal from the
course.
