Old/Unfinished Business: Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report was presented and discussed. Fundraiser Survey: Diane Fitzgerald presented the results of the fundraiser survey. There was a low response on the survey, only 68 participants, but the survey went over well and gave some good feedback from which to work. The actual results are available for review. International Night: International night was very successful. There was a low participation in the crafts which was different from the previous year. Variety Show: The committee toured Magruder High School and is excited to have the new venue. More acts have come in. The variety show is on April 20. Spring Festival: Planning is underway. The first packet went out March 23 rd. Directory: Deferred further discussion to April. Green Team & Gardens: The bottlecap sculptures are complete and were very successful. There was discussion but no decision on the garden budget. Hospitality: The hospitality committee gave peppermint patties to the staff in March. They are planning for May and the next school year. New Business: GHS After Prom Silent Auction Gift: A motion was made and seconded to give a $100 gift card to the GHS Silent Auction for After Prom. The motion was approved. The type of gift card was going to be left up to GHS. Kindergarten Orientation: Volunteers need to be set up for this event. LES PTA Board Minutes March 23, 2012 Furniture in Staff Lounge: It was noted that the furniture in the staff lounge is extremely old and well used. Discussion was had on how the furniture could be updated or replaced. New ideas are welcome. GMS Principals Meet and Greet: There was a suggestion made to have middle school kids also speak to the kids at the same time as the principal (in another room). Principals Report: Mrs. Sagona was present to discuss current topics going on at LES. The topics discussed included: After School Visits: The school needs better guidelines/policies for after hours visits to the school in order to maintain a secure and safe environment. The school is closed at 4:30. Rules do exist but may need to be better advertised. Dress Code Policy: There is concern with children wearing flip flops now that the weather is warmer. It is in the parent handbook that flip flops are not allowed for safety reasons. Mrs. Sagona is looking in to other schools handling of this issue for reference. Need to publish reminders that the children need to wear sneakers on their P.E. day. Staffing Allocations: Mrs. Sagona reported that we will remain at 18 classrooms for the 2012-13 school year. Discussion followed on how the classroom and staffing allocations work. LES has had the full time guidance counselor restored for next year. There will be a May meeting with parents regarding the possibilities of combination classes for next year. Mrs. Barnhart will be retiring at the end of the year. Clubs: There was a good turnout of volunteers for the afterschool clubs for the spring. The student participation is down from the fall, most likely due to spring sports. There was also discussion on creating a parent bookclub, summer reading ideas for kids, promethean promotion, MSA testing being completed and makeups being in process, the Grade 2 meeting regarding screening for GT, the Green Team news and that we have 4th graders entered into a writing contest. The meeting adjourned at 11:58 am. Respectfully Submitted by Shannon Hockey
