Oregon State University Retirement Association Board Meeting Minutes – Friday, November 16, 2007 Members present: Kathy Heath, Ken Krane, Kathy Meddaugh, Mike Rainbolt, Bill Smart, Barb Stuber, Gary Tiedeman, Jo Anne Trow, Shelly Houghtaling and Nancy Evans. Members not present: Erin Haynes, Bobbye Koeper and Curt McCann. President Kathy Heath called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. Minutes of Meeting of October 19, 2007. The minutes were approved as corrected. Corrected minutes will be sent electronically showing the correction in red. Treasurer’s Report. OSURA State Account balance is -$3,060.41. OSURA Foundation Account balance is $12,069.36. Continue to wait for deposit to OSURA’s state account. Committee Reports. Member Services Committee – A program regarding health care will be scheduled for fall of 2008. The Faculty, Staff & Fitness program is scheduled for January 9, 3:30pm in Owen Hall, Room 102. The PERS Workshop is scheduled for March 4, 2008, and The Pre-Retirement Seminar in April will feature Dr. Karen Hooker from OSU’s Center for Healthy Aging Research. Program Committee – Planned events are: OSU Gymnastic meet January 18 with a pre-meet meal and coach, Tanya Chaplin, speaking to the group, January 22 tour of Veterinary Medicine’s small and large animal anatomy laboratory, February 8th theater party to attend “All My Sons” with dessert and a pre-play talk by the director, mid-February a tour of Gill Annex which will focus on the wrestling facilities, February 27 tour the OSU Wave Lab, and March 12 tour the Linus Pauling Exhibit at the Library. Possible events for April and May are a tour of the beer and fermentation labs and a tour of the Hatfield Marine Science Center at the coast. The Board discussed the possibility of renting a bus for the trip to the coast rather than have attendees drive individually. Also the committee was encouraged to explore the possibility of OSU parking permits for events held on campus. Anticipated expenses would be covering the cost of gymnastic tickets and the meal, any costs related to the tour of the Vet. Lab, and the desserts served before the theater party. Volunteer Committee – No report Old Business. Retiree Directory -- They have arrived and been distributed to the membership. Shelly was congratulated and thanked for all her work on getting the directory out. Newsletter – The newest edition looks great. Thanks again to the efforts of Gary and Shelly. Training Days Event – A total of 26 attended the 2 sessions. Comments made by the OSURA panel were well received and prompted many questions followed by discussion. Annual Meeting – The meeting will be May 14, 3-5pm. To reduce facility rental charges, it was suggested that the meeting be held in the Vet. Medicine/Magruder Hall Auditorium. Perhaps, following the meeting there could be a tour Magruder Hall. Also, OSU Catering can still provide the refreshments. The question of raffles at the meeting will be discussed at the December meeting. New Business. Membership Recruitment – Total membership at this time is 326. It was noted that we might need to focus more on recent retirees with a special letter with the Board’s endorsement. An updated brochure is needed to pass out at OSURA events to encourage more retirees to join OSURA. UW Retirement Association – A letter was received from the University of Washington Retirement Association regarding a change in the format for the Fall Fest. A meeting is being planned for some time in the next 18 mos. to develop a plan for future conferences. The Board voted to send up to 4 delegates to a regional planning meeting to address and define common concerns. Budget – Kathy Meddaugh continues to “fine tune” the budget and will send by email both past and current budget information. Basketball Attendance – The President’s Office has given OSURA 8 tickets for the Men’s Basketball game scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 16. OSURA Scholarship – Ron Lovell is again chairing the Scholarship Committee. The Board recommended one $1,000 and two $500 scholarships be awarded at the May Annual Meeting. Other. Vickie Nunnemaker of the Faculty Senate Office will serve on the Member Services Committee. Discussion was held regarding the OSURA website. Programs and events will be posted. Whether retirement resources will have links on the website will be tabled for future discussion. Mike Rainbolt brought to the Board the suggestion to move OSURA’s foundation funds from the OSU Foundation to the Benton County Foundation. There is now a closer relationship between the two foundations than there was a year or more ago. Discussion followed and the matter will be referred to the Finance Committee for review.
