Module III: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Module III of this professional development program is designed to be taught in a faceto-face or online environment. It is intended to fit within a 7.5 hour day. Outcomes & Suggested Timeframe for Instruction # 1 2 3 4 Outcome Participants will develop a basic understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Participants will complete a learning styles survey for themselves and students (if during school year) and analyze which learning style(s) need to be addressed and how technology can facilitate this learning style. Participants will reflect on a “lesson seed” applying UDL and/or Assistive Technology (AT) to differentiate instruction. Participants will reflect on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies. Module III 1 Suggested Timeframe 4.0 hours 2.0 hours 1.0 hours .5 hours Materials Needed: Throughout this module, you will need the documents listed below. Some of them will be available as links within the module. Suggested timeframe: 4.0 hours. Activities Participants read the definition of Universal Design on page 5 of DeCoste’s A Handbook on Universal Design for Learning and Accessible Technology. Participants read Universal Design for Learning (UDL) FAQs and answer the questions provided on the Universal Design for Learning FAQ Review Sheet. Participants identify an environment (ex. Schools, malls, elevators, Disney World) and cite examples of Universal Design within that environment. Participants submit list of examples to facilitator as per directions. Participants read 2 out of the 4 scenario charts provided. Using the planning solutions on pages 22 – 35 of DeCoste’s A Handbook on Universal Design for Learning and Accessible Technology, complete the UDL solutions column of the charts provided. Participants select a unit in their curricular area and complete the UDL Scenario Chart #5. Participants submit completed charts to facilitator as per directions. Suggested timeframe: 2.0 hours. Activities Participants complete the K and W sections of the Learning Styles KWL Chart provided. Participants link to the VARK website and complete the online learning styles test. Participants read about their determined learning style and complete the L section of the Learning Styles KWL chart. Participants submit completed chart to facilitator as per directions. Suggested timeframe: 1.0 hours. Activities Participants will use a previously created “lesson seed” (either one created in Module II or found in TL8 Lesson Seed Examples), to reflect on UDL principles that can be applied to improve student learning and use of technology. Participants create a revised “lesson seed” integrating UDL principles. Participants submit both the original and revised “lesson seeds” to facilitator as per directions. Module III 4 Materials/Links TL8 Lesson Seed Examples or Participants Lesson Seeds from Module II Outcome 4: Participants will reflect on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies. Suggested timeframe: .5 hours. Activities Participants will reflect upon their experiences using the UDL Reflection Form, after teaching the “lesson seed” created in Outcome 3. Participants complete and submit Evaluation Form as provided by facilitator. Module III 5 Materials/Links UDL Reflection Form LEA Evaluation Form
