Module III:
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Module III of this professional development program is designed to be taught in a faceto-face or online environment. It is intended to fit within a 7.5 hour day.

Outcome
Participants will develop a basic understanding of
Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Participants will complete a learning styles survey for
themselves and students (if during school year) and
analyze which learning style(s) need to be addressed
and how technology can facilitate this learning style.
Participants will reflect on a “lesson seed” applying
UDL and/or Assistive Technology (AT) to differentiate
instruction.
Participants will reflect on Universal Design for
Learning (UDL) strategies.

Outcome 1: Participants will develop a basic understanding of Universal Design for
Learning (UDL).
Suggested timeframe: 4.0 hours.







Activities
Participants read the definition of
Universal Design on page 5 of
DeCoste’s A Handbook on Universal
Design for Learning and Accessible
Technology.
Participants read Universal Design for
Learning (UDL) FAQs and answer the
questions provided on the Universal
Design for Learning FAQ Review
Sheet.
Participants identify an environment
(ex. Schools, malls, elevators, Disney
World) and cite examples of Universal
Design within that environment.
Participants submit list of examples to
facilitator as per directions.
Participants read 2 out of the 4 scenario
charts provided. Using the planning
solutions on pages 22 – 35 of
DeCoste’s A Handbook on Universal
Design for Learning and Accessible
Technology, complete the UDL
solutions column of the charts
provided.
Participants select a unit in their
curricular area and complete the UDL
Scenario Chart #5.
Participants submit completed charts to
facilitator as per directions.

Activities
Participants will use a previously
created “lesson seed” (either one
created in Module II or found in TL8
Lesson Seed Examples), to reflect on
UDL principles that can be applied to
improve student learning and use of
technology.
Participants create a revised “lesson
seed” integrating UDL principles.
Participants submit both the original
and revised “lesson seeds” to facilitator
as per directions.

Evaluation Form as provided by
facilitator.
