Sex Trafficking Resources: Article: Sex Trafficking in Minnesota, [3-26-10, Christina McDaniel] In Minnesota alone, 8,000 – 12,000 women are the victims of sex trafficking and prostitution every day, according to Breaking Free, an organization dedicated to helping women and girls involved in sex trafficking. Defined by federal law, sex trafficking is “the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act.” Sex trafficking doesn’t have to cross international waters; it can happen right here in Winona, said Mary Ellison, staff attorney for The Advocates for Human Rights. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety found 731 sex trafficking victims over 2006-2008. In 2008, Ellison researched and produced a sex trafficking needs assessment study for Minnesota to see how the state was responding to the issue. Ellison said there is a lot of misunderstanding about sex trafficking. Some people believe it’s an issue that only affects foreign girls and women. “Sex trafficking does not discriminate on the basis of your national origin, your race, your religion, or where you were born,” said Ellison. Anyone forced to have sex for money by another human being is considered a sex trafficking victim, Ellison said.
