Math During the month of May, students are learning to calculate elapsed time using time lines to demonstrate their thinking. They are also learning about basic metric units of measurement for liquid volume and mass. Then they are solving word problems involving all of these measurement topics. Toward the end of the month, students will identify the attributes of quadrilaterals. Here are some helpful links: http://www.mathsisfun.com/measure /metric-volume.html http://www.mathsisfun.com/measure /metric-mass.html http://www.mathsisfun.com/quadrilat erals.html Writing Students are publishing their environmental issue opinion essays and getting ready to publish the essays in 6 short newsletters in each class. Each newsletter group also chose one of the member’s informative paragraphs about the environment to open the newsletter. Social Studies Students have learned about limited resources and how that affects production. They will then learn about the production process and how that has been affected by specialization. Reading This month, students will meet in literature study groups to read, respond to, and discuss fantasy novels. Later in the month, students will ask and answer questions when hearing and reading informational texts including autobiographies, biographies, and other nonfiction. Small group work will focus on questions and identifying the main idea in nonfiction.
