What Strategies Can You Use to Show Addition?
56 + 27 = ?
Counting up using 10’s then 1’s:
56 + 10 = 66, 66 + 10 = 76, 76 +4 = 80, 80 + 3 = 83
or
56 + 10 = 66, 66 + 10 = 76, 76 +1= 77 +1 = 78, etc. until you have
put 7 ones on

Using expanded notation (place value):
56 = 50 + 6
50 + 6
27 = 20 + 7
+ 20 + 7
70 + 13 = 83
(Note: 70 + 13 can also be viewed as 70 + 10 + 3)
