Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s), We hope that you are enjoying the beautiful spring weather! Thank you again for all of your help and support as we continue our busy spring schedule. We are so grateful! Here's a look ahead to what the students will be learning over the next two weeks: Math — Students will be able to add within 1000 (with composing a ten and/or a hundred) and relate strategies to a written method. They will also be able to subtract a 3-digit number from a 3-digit number (with decomposing a ten). Classes will also be able to subtract within 1000 (with decomposing a hundred) and record a written method. Students will also be able to determine the subtraction equation (with decomposing a ten or a hundred) represented by pictures of base ten blocks. Reading — Students will be able to recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. Classes will also continue reading and writing poetry and will be able to use words and phrases to supply imagery and meaning in a poem. During the second week, students will be reading a book called Boy, Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs!. Using this book, they will see how knowledge can change based on new information that is received. Writing —Students will continue writing poetry. They will then begin writing to describe a personal accomplishment. Classes will be able to write informative/explanatory texts which introduce a topic and use facts to develop points. Science — The students have been spending time observing their own caterpillars. As they move on to the next stage of the life cycle, classes will determine what kind of habitat they will now need. They will continue to record their observations. Social Studies — Students will be able to gather and interpret information about the past from reading biographies on Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Abraham Lincoln. Spelling/Word Work — We will continue to work on different activities with their words throughout the two-week period. At the end of the two-week period, students will be given a spell check to see if they have mastered the spelling of the words in addition to knowing the pattern that the word follows.
