Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
Happy New Year to all of you! We hope that all of you had a joyful holiday season and a great winter
break! Thank you so much for your continued support. We love teaching your children, and we look
forward to having a happy new year with them!
Here's a look ahead to what the students will be learning over the upcoming weeks:
Math — Students will begin working on money. As part of this unit, students will determine the value of a
collection of coins. Classes will also use skip-counting and the relationships among coin values to
determine collections of coins that equal a dollar. They also will be able to determine and count coin
combinations with a given total value. Students will also determine collections of bills and coins with
target values less than $100
Reading — Students will be able to describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a
text. They will also be able to explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text. Classes will
also be able to identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text. They will also be able to ask questions
to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Writing — Second graders will finish their narrative in which they retell an original version of a traditional
story (fable, folktale, or fairy tale) or create their own folktale. After they finish, they will create an audio
recording of their stories.
Science — The students will be able to identify and describe ways to observe minute objects. They will
also describe and compare minutes objects.
Social Studies — Students will be able to explain how people with a family share and help pass on
traditions and customs. They will also be able to compare the elements of two different cultures and how
they meet their human needs. Students will also share their own cultural displays with the other second
grade classes.
Spelling/Word Work—Students will continue to work on different activities with their words throughout
the two-week period. At the end of the two-week period, students will be given a spell check to see if
they have mastered the spelling of the words in addition to knowing the pattern that the word follows.
