SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Below are only some of the scholarships that are available for the 2015-16 school
year. More will be added as they arrive to Wheaton HS. Please research the
other websites listed below. There are many, many scholarships available!
Scholarships are monetary gifts that can be used to pay for college. Students do not have to repay scholarship money.
Remember that no legitimate competitive scholarship will ever require information like a credit card number, a bank
account number, or any kind of upfront fee. No legitimate scholarship website can guarantee that a student will receive
a scholarship.

Scholarship: The Gates Millennium Scholarship
Deadline: January 13, 2016
Additional Information: The GMS 2016 Application will open on August 1, 2015. To
be eligible for the Gates Millennium Scholars Program students must:








Be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian American/Pacific Islander or
Hispanic American;
Be Citizens, legal permanent residents or nationals of the United States;
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on an unweighted 4.0 scale or earned a GED;
Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular
or other activities;
Meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria;
Enroll for the first time at a U.S. located , accredited college or university (with the exception of
students concurrently pursuing a high school diploma) in the fall as a full-time, degree seeking,
first year student;
Have completed and submitted their application by the deadline; and
Have the following forms completed and submitted by the deadline on their behalf:
1. A Nominator Form-an evaluation of the student's academic record, and;
2. A Recommender Form- an evaluation of the student's community service and leadership activities

Scholarship: Microsoft STEM Scholarship
Deadline: January 31, 2016
Microsoft STEM Scholarship is offered to students who pursue studies in Computer Science and
related STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. The scholarship is for underrepresented students.
Under-represented students includes women, minority students (African-American, Hispanic or
Native American etc.) or students with disabilities. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA
and must be enrolled in a four-year college or university full-time. They must be pursuing an
undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical
discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics.
Applicants will be chosen based on academic achievement, leadership qualities, passion for
STEM fields, and financial need. The scholarship is offered to encourage underrepresented
groups to pursue STEM fields of study. The annual scholarship covers partial or full tuition
costs.

Scholarship: I Empower Scholarship
Deadline: February 1, 2016
In order to be eligible to receive a Thursday Network I EMPOWER Scholarship, one must:
● Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 based on a 4.0 scale;
● Plan to attend a four-year college or university in the fall of 2016;
● Demonstrate a commitment to community service;
● Demonstrate a financial need;
● Be a minority of African, Hispanic, and/or Latino descent;
● Be a U.S. Citizen;
● Be a permanent resident and/or attend high school in the District of Columbia,
Montgomery County (MD), or Prince George’s County (MD); and
● Complete and supply a copy of all application materials postmarked no later than
February 1, 2016

Scholarship: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated - Eta Pi Zeta Chapter Scholarship
Deadline: February 12, 2016
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated - Eta Pi Zeta Chapter is pleased to announce that it
is now accepting applications for the 2016 scholarship awards. Book and regular
scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $1,000 (subject to change).
CRITERIA
• Be a high school senior,
• be accepted at a (2) or (4) year College or University,
• have a minimum cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.5, and
• live or attend school in Montgomery County, MD.
APPLICATION
PROCEDURES:
To be considered for the scholarship, an applicant must
submit:
• The attached scholarship application.
• An essay (instructions are provided as part of this application).
• Two letters of recommendation (one must be from a teacher and
sent in a sealed envelope signed by a school official).
• An official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript indicating the
cumulative unweighted GPA.

Scholarship: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship
Deadline: February 13, 2016
The Scholarship Program currently has the following types of scholarships, which
are explained below:
1. County-Wide Scholarship
The County-Wide Scholarship was established to provide financial awards for high
school students who have excelled in their academics.
2. MCAC Educational Program Scholarship
The Montgomery County (Maryland) Alumnae Chapter (MCAC) Educational
Program Scholarship was established to provide financial awards to high school
students who have participated in the MCAC Educational Program for a minimum of
two consecutive years.
3. Career/Vocational/Technical Scholarship
The Vocational/Training Scholarship was established to provide financial awards to
students who want to advance their education/skill set by participating in a
career/vocational/technical program. These programs are traditionally described as
those that focus on specific vocational skills needed within certain occupations.

Scholarship: Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship Contest
Deadline: February 26, 2016
Additional Information: Design a greeting card and you could win a $10,000
scholarship plus your entry will be made into a bonafide greeting card by the leading
publisher of premium quality cards in the United States, The Gallery Collection.

Submit original photo, artwork or computer graphics for the front of a greeting card

Scholarship: Paul Robeson Scholarship
Deadline: March 4, 2016
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.'s Paul Robeson Scholarship 2016 emphasis is to provide
scholarships to African American males, an under- represented group seeking higher education
scholarships. The scholarships, for Montgomery County, Maryland high school graduating seniors, have
a minimum value of$1,000.
Applicants must comply with the following criteria:

Write a 500 word essay on the topic: Recent well-publicized and controversial deaths
of African Americans at the hands of police make it appear that the relationship
between the police and the community has diminished. Does a community's
relationship with the police matter? If so, what would you do to improve that
relationship?
Separately, write a 200 word biography on Paul Robeson.
Submit an official high school transcript.
Submit three letters of references: two from school officials (guidance counselor,
principal, teacher, etc.) and one from a community organization or faith-based group.
Describe your leadership qualities (e.g., in community, school, church, or athletics).
Provide a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of2.5.
Provide a statement of financial need (attach a separate sheet, if necessary).
This package will be provided to Montgomery County high school counselors to disseminate to graduating
senior African American males. Submit applications post marked by March 4, 2016.

Scholarship: WRTC Scholarship
Deadline: March 23, 2016
Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) is pleased to announce two
scholarships available to your high school seniors: Leslie Ebert Legacy of Life Essay and
Leslie Ebert Legacy of Life Video. Applicable students can apply for both
scholarships. We are excited to announce that two of the ten scholarships will be $5,000
scholarships.
The Leslie Ebert Memorial Fund will award one $5,000 first place, one $3,000 second
place, and three $1,000 honorable mentions for both scholarships.

This scholarship award is open to any male graduating high school seniors that:
1) Lives within the Greater Washington DC Metropolitan area (VA, DC, MD)
2) Possesses a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or better on 4.0 scale
3) Plans to attend a four year college or university
Sons or male dependents of members of the Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha,

Scholarship: BigSun Scholarship

The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes
succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a
deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of
which sport they are participating in.
Amount of Award: $500.00
The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post
secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution or in
