Since 1990, more than 85,500 AVID students have graduated from high school and planned to attend college. What is AVID? •Nationally acclaimed college readiness system •Designed to increase school-wide learning and performance •Targets the "Academic Middle" AVID Student Profile: • Average to high test scores • 2.0 – 3.5 GPA • College potential with support • Desire and determination • Must apply, interview, and be selected The Mission of AVID “AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.” AVID Closes the Achievement Gap for ALL Students What is the AVID elective? • The core component of the AVID Program grades 9-12 • Supports students as they challenge themselves in more rigorous classes. • Students are immersed in a collegeminded culture. What is the AVID elective? • Access to tutors, who are top high school seniors and college students • Access to information about colleges and universities • field trips, guest speakers, career exploration, scholarship opportunities, and college admission requirement information. What AVID is not: • • • • a remedial program a study hall an alternative program a quick fix Why AVID? High School Teachers estimate that: •63% of their graduating seniors will be adequately prepared for college-level coursework •51% will graduate from college (MetLife, 2011). •Data shows that only 25% of high school graduates who took the ACT test were ready for college-level work (ACT, 2012). • With an Elbow Partner discuss: – What are your expectation for the class? – Why do you want to be in AVID?
