Poetry Project
To finish the poetry unit, you have a three part assignment. In class, we will read a poem titled “I
Am From.” You will be creating your own poem modeled after this poem.
Part 1: SIFTT “I Am From” by George Ella Lyon. You need two examples of each part of SIFTT and a
quote to support each example. Complete this on a blank sheet of paper, and turn it in to the inbox.
Part 2: Write a poem about your own culture. Use Lyon’s poem as an example. In this poem, you need
the following:








A minimum of 24 lines (10 pts)
The topic must be your cultural experiences or cultural expression. The writing must be
creative in nature. (10 pts)
Rhyme and/or Assonance (10 pts)
Anaphora (10 pts)
Five examples of sensory imagery (20 pts)
Two examples of figurative language (10 pts)
Correct spelling, grammar and formatting (20 pts)
A minimum of four visuals, pictures, or photographs that represent the theme of the
poem (10 pts)
The poem must be typed in 12 pt font. It must have your name, class period, date, and a title.
You may write a rough draft if you want, but the final draft must be posted digitally to edmodo. Create
an edmodo account and find the group code on my webpage. It MUST be posted before the class day it
is due. The visuals are meant to enhance the poem and help the reader understand the message you
want to get across. This is due on 9/19/12.
Part 3: You will read and SIFTT one of your classmate’s poems. More instructions on the third part of
the assignment will follow.
