Meeting Minutes – September 7, 2010

PTA Meeting called to order: 7:35 P.M.
Introductions of all attendees.
JENNIFER YOUNG:
Approval of May and June minutes. Motion to approve May and June minutes. Motion
approved.
CATHERINE LONG:
Principles report/School updates. Currently at 514 students, all class sizes are in
accordance with county guidelines – most schools have at least some classes above
guidelines.
Construction of the portable railings to be completed soon.
*Reminder that back to school night is September 22nd*
JENNIFER YOUNG:
Volunteers need to move students and teachers into portables.
CARRIE HIRSCHFIELD – TREASURER”S REPORT:
Carrie reported that the fiscal year 7/1-6/30 membership is great. Spirit wear did really well.
PTA recommendation is to have 25K remain in bank account, currently we are at 30k. Fund
should be available for large purchases we may need. Past large purchases include new
playground equipment and sound system.
MARQUETTE HEAVEN – MEMBERSHIP UPDATE:
Marquette reports we are currently at 88 members!
CHERYL MOSS HERMAN – ADVOCACY UPDATE:
Key issues at RPES, we are at 126% capacity. RPES was designed for 409 students, we
are at 514. We are still looking for funding for 12 classroom additions, once approved, it
will take up to 36 months.
Hearing before Mayor and City Council takes place next week. Cheryl urges all to write
letters/emails or to testify before.
Looking to form an advocacy group.
PROGRAMS AND EVENTS:
CHRISTINA HALPERN - Register all grocery cards to earn points/’money for RPES. Last
year profit was $2,700.
ROXANA HALL – 514 students at 100 box tops each can bring in $5k! In need of a ‘box top
team’ to count box tops.
MARQUETTE HEAVEN, NAACP Rep – looking for parental involvement.
KARLA BERGGREN – Sneak Peak welcome back event was a great success
ERIN LOBATO – Introduction of all grade reps and gained new rep for 5th grade. Erin is
putting together an email communication for all the grade reps. Room parents will be
assigned per the PM teacher (2nd grade and above)
CHRISTINA HALPERN – Volunteer coordinator. Information regarding volunteer training.
MCBE wants record of recorded hours for volunteering. Training is required every year that
you volunteer – only if working directly with students – not if working from home. Oct. 5th is
the next training and PTA meeting, babysitting will be provided for this.
NATALIE CHILDS – Lunch and recess volunteering. Need donations of hand sanitizers.
Reminder to pack extra water or drink for the kids.
CAT GOODYEAR – Community Service. November is Walk for Heros. Need volunteers for
this and Food drive, clothing drive, school supply drive… Upcoming new program “waste
free Wednesdays” – kids will. Be rewarded for being waste free!
STEPHANIE HART – Pizza Bingo is Oct. 8th, 6PM Friday night at St. Raphael’s trumpet
room. Donations asked of $15 per family. Need volunteers for bingo.
RANDI FREUNDICH & MELISSA CULLEN – Spirit wear – sold out all kids sizes, ordering
more to be here by back to school night. Some older versions shirts still available.
SUE SMITH – Listserv. Zoies Kitchen restaurant night is 9/27. 10% of sales will go to
RPES – must bring flyer to. 190 members currently on the listserv.
JENNIFER YOUNG – New Business. Bylaws changed to add VP.
CHERYL MOSS HERMAN – motion to approve first resolution.
