Narrative Associate in Science in Business Administration for Transfer Item 1. Goals and Objectives. The purpose of the Associate in Science in Business Administration for Transfer (AS-T) degree is to provide an unobstructed pathway for Contra Costa College students into the California State University system. This proposal was developed in accordance with requirements of SB 1440, and is intended to provide open access and extended opportunities for student transfers, particularly those populations who have been under-represented in the past. A connected purpose of the AS-T in Business Administration degree is to also provide facility for student exploration of career technical education and strong preparation for occupations awaiting them in our global economy. Possible occupations or fields the degree will prepare students for are: Accountancy, auditor, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, cost estimator, or financial manager Marketing, retail sales, wholesale/retail buyer, or purchasing agent Employment interviewer, personnel trainer, or underwriter Management and administration, or management consultancy Students who complete the degree will have acquired the necessary competencies to successfully secure gainful employment in the above and other-related occupations or fields. They will also be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of business-related terms/issues so that they can communicate effectively in an organizational context Demonstrate an understanding of business situations after reviewing existing industry-related media or case studies, and discern the bigger picture problem(s) existing in the business world Demonstrate, based on their studies and research, the functional framework(s) needed to behave ethically in business relationships Determine, based on the context of business situations, the general legal principles that apply, and discern whether a crime has or is being committed against a business Conceptualize the four management functions universally accepted and used in the management of organizations Conceptualize in a business industry article or situation, the salient issue(s) crucial to business effectiveness and problem resolution Analyze and identify the critical mistakes made by managers in the managing of certain organizations, and be able to prescribe a solution(s) that will help place the organization on the right track Item 2. Catalog Description. Since most students will likely work in business or government-related organizations, the business department generally seeks to 1) provide awareness of, and knowledge about, the domestic and global business environments; 2) prepare students for transfer to four-year academic programs in business and economics; 3) provide awareness of possible business-related jobs and careers; and 4) enhance their appreciation of lifelong learning as a basis for continued self-development and professional career success in the business arena. Students who complete this program will have completed the lower-division requirements for transfer to the CSU system, and have acquired the necessary analytical tools to successfully secure gainful employment in most businessrelated fields. Some Possible Careers: Accountant, auditor, cost estimator, financial manager, marketing, retail sales, purchasing agent, underwriter, wholesale/retail buyer, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, employment interviewer, management consultant, personnel trainer. Successful completion of the AS-T in Business Administration allows priority admissions into the California State University system, but not a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that does accept this degree will be required to complete no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. The AS-T may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a university or college that is not part of the CSU system. However, since a baccalaureate degree is strong preparation for students considering a professional career in the business field, completion of this curriculum will show commitment to, and provides evidence of readiness and scholarly acumen for the requirements of the University of California system, and various other private four-year transfer institutions. The AS-T requires completion and certification of the California State University General Education (CSU GE) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) as well as the specific major degree requirements. Students should work with a counselor to identify major coursework that can be used to fulfill CSU GE or IGETC categories. Students planning to transfer should contact a counselor to identify major coursework that can be used to fulfill GE requirements and for more information on college specific transfer program requirements. Pursuant to SB1440, section 66746, a student must complete the following requirements in order to earn an AS-T in Business Administration: Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University, including both of the following: o The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education – Breadth Requirements. o A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis.
