Introduction
If you have questions about how the Data Studio products are packaged and what
capability is available in which product, you've come to the right place. This article
attempts to clarify what capabilities are available in each product offering and where you
can find them to try them.
Although a brief description of functionality is needed in order to describe the packaging,
the intent of this article is not to fully describe and catalog the features of each product.
For more information about capabilities, see the Resources section.
What is Data Studio?
Data Studio is the family name for a portfolio of products used to deliver on IBM’s
vision of a modular, integrated data management environment. This environment is
designed to increase productivity for all roles throughout the data lifecycle and to help
reduce the complexity and cost of managing database applications.
Each Data Studio offering is designed to address tasks found in each phase of the
application lifecycle from a data management viewpoint. This article focuses on
describing each of the products that manage various phases of the application lifecycle
and how those products are packaged. (Figure 1).
Figure 1. Integrated data management capabilities in Data Studio
The following is a high level description of the products:

Rational Data Architect: Simplifies data modeling and integration design,
enabling architects to discover, model, relate, and standardize diverse and
distributed data assets.



Data Studio Developer: Provides a complete development and testing
environment for building database objects, queries, database logic, and pureQuery
applications.
Data Studio pureQuery Runtime: Delivers an innovative Java data access layer,
designed to provide better performing database applications while greatly
improving programmer productivity and application security and manageability.
Data Studio Administrator: Manages complex structural changes while
preserving data, privileges, all dependent objects, and application binding.
There are additional products that are part of the integrated data management portfolio,
such as DB2 Performance Expert, DB2 Optimization Expert for z/OS, and Optim Test
Data Manager. However, those products are not described in this article, as their
packaging has not changed.
Data Studio provides both no-charge and fee-based capabilities across the various tasks
of the integrated data management lifecycle.
Data Studio packaging
Many questions come from people who have worked with the Data Studio 1.1.x
packages. So it may be helpful to review that packaging before going into more detail on
1.2.
In Data Studio 1.1, the no-charge functionality was consolidated into two packages:

One package was Eclipse-based and focused on desktop tasks. This package was
(and is) called "Data Studio."
The Eclipse-based Data Studio provided functions such as data definition
language (DDL) building, SQL building and debugging, Web service
development, XML editing, and other assorted developer or DBA type tasks. This
no-charge functionality found in Data Studio 1.1 was a subset of the functionality
found in the Data Studio Developer chargeable offering.
The fully supported version of Data Studio 1.1 was available through download
from Passport Advantage for IBM data server customers. It was also available
without official support through the ibm.com Web site, to allow anyone to use it.
The ibm.com download differed slightly from the Passport Advantage function in
that it previewed use of pureQuery APIs, tooling, and runtime, although
deployment was restricted to dynamic execution only. In 1.2, the availability of
standard trial software for Data Studio Developer and pureQuery Runtime
alleviated the need to package this preview capability in the no-charge download.

The other package, Data Studio Administration Console, provided browser-based
capability to monitor the health, availability, and Q-Replication status of DB2®
for Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows® data servers. This package was only
available as a download from ibm.com.
Of course, the Data Studio portfolio also included purchasable packages available with
Rational Data Architect, Data Studio Developer, and Data Studio pureQuery Runtime to
provide enhanced capability above and beyond what the no-charge Data Studio can
provide. Similarly, DB2 Performance Expert provides capabilities over and above what
the Data Studio Administration Console could provide.
What's new in Data Studio 1.2 packaging
The latest release of the Data Studio portfolio (1.2) made the following packaging
changes:




Data Studio Administration Console has no change to its packaging, but does now
include support for health and replication monitoring of DB2 for z/OS databases.
Data Studio Administrator joined the Data Studio family. It was previously
known as DB2 Change Management Expert for DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and
Windows. Data Studio Administrator is designed to provide more complex
change management along with compare capability and also facilitates complex
migrations to production environments (details below). Be sure to try the 30-day
trial download.
Data Studio Developer has added significant capability for developers and DBAs
(see the Resources section.) Be sure to try the 30-day trial download to
experiment with the full capabilities of that offering. When Data Studio
Developer times out, complimentary functions remain available after the timeout,
or you can download the complimentary capabilities.
The Data Studio pureQuery Runtime is not available as a separately
downloadable trial, but it is included for development purposes on a trial basis on
the same machine as the Data Studio Developer trial.
Now look at the individual products and see what capabilities you get for various
lifecycle tasks over and above that provided in the Data Studio no-charge download.
