ESW Open Seminar Series Department of Social Work & Social Care Monday 9th December, 5pm Room 104, Fulton Speaker Tony Evans, Professor of Social Work, Department of Social Work, Royal Holloway, University of London presents: Managerialism, discretion and the corrupted world of policy practice ____________________________________ Street-level bureaucracies and the front-line discretion that characterises them are, in part, the products of the policy choices and priorities of senior managers and politicians. In this seminar, Professor Evans will argue that the ‘corrupted world of service’ – policy confusion, resource shortage and extensive front-line discretion – is less a problem that managerialism can solve and more the product of managerial concerns with parsimony and promotion of entrepreneurialism, and political concerns with the avoidance of blame and culpability.
