ESW Open Seminar Series CIRCY Monday 8th July, 5pm Room (TBA), Fulton Speaker Dr Jane Pilcher, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Leicester presents: Clothing Altercations: The politics of children’s clothing ____________________________________ In this seminar, Dr Pilcher focuses on the recent politics of children’s clothing, which has emerged in the context of wider anxieties about the ‘crises of childhood’ in contemporary consumer societies. Girls’ fashions have especially been at the forefront of concerns voiced by adults about what clothes contemporary cohorts of children wear, and where. Dr Pilcher will discuss a range of evidence of concern about children’s clothing, including examples from popular culture, formal governance and corporate businesses. She will also examine the interpersonal politics between parents and children as to what gets bought, worn and where. ____________________________________ This seminar can be joined remotely by logging on to: https://connectpro.sussex.ac.uk/circy_pilcher8jul13 This seminar will also be recorded and available to view retrospectively at: www.sussex.ac.uk/education/newsandevents/events/seminarscurrent
