Course Description: This course provides instruction in grammar and writing for intermediate
ESL students.
Course Objectives:
At the completion of the course, students will be able to:

Use specific grammar points to write passages of at least 150-200 words.
Write simple and compound sentences, and simple adverbial clauses.
Identify grammatical patterns in reading passages.
Identify parts of speech and their uses in sentences.
Apply proofreading skills to help control sentence-level errors.
Course Content:

Verb tense review with emphasis on question formation:
 Simple present tense
 Present progressive tense (including non-action or stative verbs)
 Past tense (including “used to”)

Verb tenses: formation and use in statements, yes/no questions, and information questions
 Past progressive tense
 Future tense with “will” and “be going to”

Parts of speech and their uses in sentences:
 Review nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, articles
 Adverbs of frequency, adverbs of degree (too, very), subordinate conjunctions

 Reflexive pronouns

Grading Policy:
A letter grade will be assigned based on the following categories:
90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F.
Students who choose the credit/no credit option will receive CR for an average of 70% and above, or
NC for an average below 70%.
