requirement for Music 159, s/he would have to
demonstrate both knowledge and skill in five
entrance skills (see Prerequisite Validation). The
student would be asked to play a piece of music s/he
already knows which demonstrates this ability, and to
read at sight something from the Music 158 class
repertoire.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for the second-semester beginning and intermediate-level player with some
reading and playing experience. Included will be instruction on increasing the reading range up the
fingerboard, rhythmic fluency, chord vocabulary, harmonic theory for the fingerboard, playing in all
open position keys, new combinations of left and right-hand fingering, movable chords and scales,
improvising solos, building a repertoire, classical solos, duets, trios, folk songs, and easy jam tunes,
including basic techniques of classical guitar playing and song accompaniment. May be repeated one
time.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Perform at least 4 songs, and at least one by memory.
Read single note melodies in the first through seventh positions with eighth-note syncopations and melodic
leaps.
Play scales and cadential chord progression in open position keys of C, G, D, Dm, A, Am, E, Em.
Play pieces with basic classical pick-hand technique with rest-stroke melodies and free-stroke accompaniment,
in two and three voice textures. Selections by Carulli, Carcassi, Sor, Galen, et al.
Count time and play an independent part with a small group of 2-4 students in arrangements of music from
classical to modern.
Demonstrate rhythmic continuity in solo and ensemble music.
Play movable position chords of the E-shape, A-shape and C-shape.
Play movable position scales of the E-shape, A-shape and C-shape
Improvise a solo lead over a simple harmonic progression.
Play technical exercises which develop left/right hand ability in various ways.
Transpose a song to a variety of keys.

% Review of first position reading, chords and playing techniques, sitting positions, hand
positions, rest- & tree-stroke articulation, strumming styles.
% Introduction to songs with movable chords.
% Transposition of movable chord songs to several new keys.
% Development of pick-hand melodic articulation in an arpeggiated multi-voiced texture, frethand independence, slurs and trills, practice strategies
% Reading exercises and music in 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th positions.
% Folk and popular songs with several chords, simple to complex strumming.
% Reading from a songbook “fake chart”. Playing “in style” arranging.
% Harmonic analysis and melodic improvisation within defined parameters..
