COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on individual studio instruction for the development of performance skills. Students will develop their skills through individual instruction and group master classes. Each semester students will perform a juried four-fiverepertoire performance for a music faculty committee as a final exam. Designed for music majors who are able to perform on their instrument at college level. Audition required. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Rehearse, prepare, and perform standard repertoire for the instrument. 2. Demonstrate technical instrument facility (scales, arpeggi, trills, etc.) 3. Analyze the melodic harmonic, rhythmic, and formal structure of the compositions being studied. 4. Define and discuss the elements of music (as they appear in the repertoire) and explain how they determine style. 5. Evaluate various styles of music as they relate to performance. 6. Demonstrate proper performance practice, stage presence, and recital preparation. 7. Plan, organize, and demonstrate integrated practice procedures. 8. Critically evaluate live performances by other students and visiting artists. Students repeating this course will be able to: 1. Demonstrate greater technical achievement on the instrument. 2. Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity. 3. Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading. 4. Perform more difficult repertoire. 5. Demonstrate skillful knowledge of more standard repertoire pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Contemporary, Jazz and Commercial genre. Students will perform new music each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.
