COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This course is an integrated approach to developing basic reading, writing, critical thinking, and study
skills. It prepares the student for success in ENGL 110A, ENGL 139, and/or ENGL 142A. Not
repeatable.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Recognize, use, and spell basic college vocabulary.
2. Identify the topic, main idea, and supporting details in basic level, non-fiction paragraphs and
articles.
3. Analyze and evaluate basic reading materials.
4. Write summaries of basic level reading materials.
5. Recognize and write simple and compound sentences.
6. Write coherent expository paragraphs of approximately 150 words with a clear topic sentence
and relevant supporting details.
7. Demonstrate effective use of test-taking skills.
