They exhibit appropriate intervention techniques through bibliotherapy (reading books), problem solving strategies and using art and dramatic play as intervention techniques and means for expressing feelings. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to provide an overview of different approaches to violence intervention and counseling techniques that are appropriate for use with young children. The course context will consist of counseling theory and practice that is designed for working with children and families who have experienced stress and chronic violence in their lives. Teachers are expected to demonstrate skill development in an approved early childhood field based placement setting. Not repeatable COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of the course the student will be able to: Analyze personal coping and anger management skills. Describe counseling theory related to violence intervention. Identify coping strategies related to anger and frustration. Demonstrate techniques that provide for appropriate expression of feelings by young children. Identify anti-bias attitudes that affect the counseling relationship and reactions to violence. Demonstrate counseling referral and responsive planning.
