ACTIVITIES: (Please provide a list of the activities students will perform in order to satisfy the HBA requirement): COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course provides instruction and practice in a lecture/laboratory setting in all phases of makeup specifically designed for theatrical use. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course the student will be able to: Identify the various types of makeup commonly used in theater Describe the steps used in makeup for a variety of characters Use makeup to interpret an author's characterization Analyze a visual characterization through makeup design Interpret a production through makeup design Examine and use safety procedures for the field of makeup design. Demonstrate proper knowledge of the preparation of the skin and the removal of the makeup products. INTENDED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the completion of the course the student will be able to: Identify the various types of makeup commonly used in theater Describe the steps used in makeup for a variety of characters Interpret a production through makeup design Examine and use safety procedures for the field of makeup design. COURSE CONTENT (Lecture): Functions of makeup in the theater Facial anatomy Color theory Design basics Designing standard characters with paint Three dimensional techniques Symbolic makeup design Design character makeup for an entire production Render designs in either computer enhancement, if available, or other method Create Makeup Charts for each character Show research for characters COURSE CONTENT (Lab): Application of character makeup, using various techniques and makeups Create hair styles for characters in stage production Use of airbrush Application of facial hair METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture Demonstration Discussion Collaborative projects INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: NOTE: To be UC/CSU transferable, the text must be dated within the last 7 years OR a statement of justification for a text beyond the last 7 years must be included.
