COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This course is an orientation course for Campus Police Aides of the Contra Costa College district Police Department,
and for students who are interested in employment as police aides. This course will provide training so that Police
Aides can provide the highest level of service to the college community. Topics will include: preparing for an
employment interview and background check, policies and procedures, duties, defensive tactics. CERT training, OC
spray, and community relations. This is a hybrid course with online elements including; lecture, movies, and testing.
The lab portion involves physical activity related to defensive tactics associated with arrest techniques. Students are
also expected to participate in physical activities related to disaster response training (CERT).
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate use of tactical communication and management of aggressive behavior skills.
Apply handcuffs properly and conduct a weapons search.
Evaluate, react to, or escape from potentially dangerous situations.
Perform and arm-drag takedown.
Properly deploy OC spray.
Identify appropriate VC violations and write a citation.
Demonstrate job interview skills and describe what occurs in a background investigation.
Identify police aide rules in the police procedures manual.
Demonstrate Cert Rescue and Response techniques.
INTENDED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Understanding the campus police hiring process.
Explain the responsibilities and duties of the police aide.
Explain and demonstrate the proper application of CERT Techniques, OC spray, Police defensive tactics and handcuffs.

OUTSIDE OF CLASS WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:
Title 5, section 55002.5 establishes that a range of 48 -54hours of lecture, study, or lab work is required for one unit of credit.
For each hour of lecture, students should be required to spend an additional two hours of study outside of class to earn one
unit of credit.
