ACTIVITIES: (Please provide a list of the activities students will perform in order to satisfy the HBA requirement): COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION This course is an overview of the techniques in counseling and interviewing available to practitioners in Corrections. The student will learn the use of appropriate techniques and theories in confidence building which correctional employees may use in client interviews and counseling sessions. This is a basic course for students planning to enter or who are already employed in the Correctional Science field. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course the student will be able to: Demonstrate skills in individual and group communication dynamics. Demonstrate the ability to conduct an interview. Discuss various kinds of intervention/counseling techniques. Demonstrate and explain the development of roles and responsibilities of clients and staff. Identify obstacles that complicate the task of conducting objective interviews and counseling. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Evaluate inmate needs and security concerns and assign placement. Demonstrate skills in individual and group communication. Review theories of communication and personality. For each hour of lecture, students should be required to spend an additional two hours of study outside of class to earn one unit of credit.
