Today was pizza day. Here usually wispy silver hair was pulled back neatly in a beehive bun. Her black and white checkered apron was already covered with flour, and we had not yet begun to bake. Grandma reached for a rolling pin, tossed it to me, and said, “Start rollin”. First, I rolled the gooey dough and spread the spicy sauce. Grandma grated the cheese, tossed it on the sauce, and peppered it with pepperoni. She placed the pizza in the hot oven. Then we gave each other a “high five. When I noticed that the cheese was bubbling and the crust was browning, I said, “Look, Grandma, I think it’s done. It looks like marshmallows on a campfire.” She peered in the oven and replied similing, “You’re absolutely right- golden, brown and delicious, ready to eat. We carefully took the pizza out of the oven. It was as hot as an August sun, so we cautiously cut it into wedges. Finally, Grandma and I gobbled our pizza like scavengers. Grandma exclaimed, “This is the best pizza I’ve ever had!” I looked at Grandma, and she smiled at me and gave me a wink. They simply added finer ingredients and changed the name to placenta. Italian peasants ate pizza for centuries. Surprisingly, even Queen Margharita of Italy was anxious to try this delectable dish.
