Student Affairs Communications Group Minutes January 22, 2014 Attendance: Kami Hammerschmith, Kent Sumner, Brianna McNall, Marigold Holmes, Ruth Sterner, Colleen Schlonga, Wendy Little, Majeed Badizadegan Next meeting of the Student Affairs Communications Group will be Wednesday, January 29, 2014, 9 a.m. -10:30 a.m., MU Council Room. Topic: OSU homepage update and info gathering with David Baker, University Relations & Marketing Interactive Communications Director. Today Jeff Todd, Digital Print Consultant with Printing & Mailing Services has been on campus since October. He wanted to inform the group about two new services from Printing & Mailing Services. Printing & Mailing Services has a new location in the Memorial Union. The XPress Stop is located in MU 109. They are open until 6:30 p.m. Jeff said it can do almost everything the main location in Cascade Hall can do, only faster. Posters, flyers, brochures, etc. can be done the same day and sometimes while you wait. There is self-service and full-service, color and black-and-white. They offer folding, binding, shipping and mailing. They do not offer mail merge. Jobs done at Cascade Hall can be picked up at the XPress Stop. Pam Moore is the manager. The MU location also offers notary and passport photos. They have a Kodak photo kiosk to print photos from your card. It is self-service and the photos are processed while you wait. At the Cascade Hall location, Printing & Mailing Services has a new Xerox 1000 digital press. Jeff said the output quality and speed are amazing. The press can also print with clear dry ink that is similar to a spot varnish. When setting up a document, the clear dry ink is setup similar to a spot color and should be called “clear.” It must be set to overprint. It is a waxed-based toner that is very shiny. Jeff said the best effect is on dull, clear, white paper. He recommends printing it on dull, uncoated paper rather than gloss paper. The maximum coverage is 100 percent. It cannot be layered. Jeff said the cost is very reasonable. He estimated for 11x17 using clear dry ink in the design it would run 15-20 cents per sheet. A full flood usage would be a little more. The new press also has built-in saddle stitching that can square off the edges. 13x19 is the largest print size available. Contacts at Printing & Mailing Services are… Print jobs – Kelly Chapman and Jeff Todd Mailing – Megan Falk, Mitch Hemmer, Irene Chabino Design online – Gail Udell XPress Shop – Pam Moore Jeff said as far as he knows everything is on hold regarding Printing & Mailing Services moving out of Cascade Hall to an off-campus location. He said they are staying in Cascade Hall for now. In the future Printing & Mailing Services would like to do more e-mail marketing and would like to expand their design services. They also hope to continue to improve their customer service. Jeff provided two brochures – one on the services available at XPress Stop and a Clear Dry Ink Usage Guide. He said both brochures were printed on 80# Opus dull paper. The Opus paper is available from 60# text to 100# cover. For an uncoated paper he recommended Tiara. Jeff said he would provide paper samples by request. He can be reached at Jeffrey.todd@oregonstate.edu. In other announcements, Kent said the supervisors of student designers will need to start thinking about hiring for 2014-15 designers. Kami announced that Student Media is now offering Art practicum for student designers to work in the Student Media Creative Services department. Kent said that the search committee for the new Student Affairs marketing position has been named. Kent, Wendy and Ruth are all on the committee. Maureen Cochran from Student Affairs Research, Evaluation & Planning is the chair. The position will start July 1.
