Topic: Revisit Guidebook. What is working, what is not, and where to go with it. Today Wendy welcomed everyone back for the new school year. We went around the table for introductions. Wendy welcomed Carolyn Boyd, the new Director of Marketing & Communications for Student Affairs. Carolyn shared her four major areas of focus: 1. A new student experience website and communications – user friendly, geared to students 2. FYE communications planning 3. Division-wide planning – assist departments needing additional support 4. Research and assessment – the Student Affairs Annual Report Departments were asked to share something they are excited about and/or a project they felt could benefit from collaboration. Career Services (Michael) – He is in a new position as Creative & Technical Coordinator. It is part of a new effort by Career Services to make marketing a centerpiece of the department. They are expanding their marketing department. They are moving their website to Drupal 7. They are working on their Career Trail and Beaver Jobs (for off-campus employment). Student Media (Kami) – The department will be changing their name from Student Media to Orange Media Network. It will be a soft launch fall and winter and debut at the dedication of the new SEC. All signage in the new building will say Orange Media Network. They are working on their first marketing plan. The department has five student programs – The Daily Barometer, Beaver’s Digest, Prism magazine, KBVRFM and KBVR-TV. The Beaver Yearbook will no longer be published. Starting in 2014-15, Beaver’s Digest will be a three-times-per-year magazine that will cover student life and be free for students. Student Health Services (Colleen & Rob) – They shared videos for AlcoholEdu and Haven. They hired a student videographer to add more video to their website and social media. They hope to launch their Drupal 7 site by end of the month. They launched their Student Health Services Tebeau Hall Same-Day Clinic on Monday, Sept. 29 and had four student visits. They are in a soft launch period. There were about 4,500 students that took Haven and about 3,500 that took AlcoholEdu. It was a partnership with START, SHS, UHDS, CAPS, and OEI. They are launching a new center this fall – Alcohol, Other Drug & Prevention Center. It will be a collaborative center. Disability Access Services (Brianna) – They held an Open House in their testing center on University Day. They will hold another Open House on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in their main office in Kerr and in their testing center in Heckart Lodge. Demonstrations will be provided. Recreational Sports (Wendy & Majeed) – They are working on two new living learning centers in combination with UHDS. A well being center is being launched this fall and one for adventure will launch next fall. Friday, Oct. 17 is the Be Well 5K Run Walk ‘N Roll. Kent and Wendy will be attending the NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) marketing conference in conjunction with ACUI (Association of College Unions International) in early November. They are presenting twice – once on working with student designers and once on working in Student Affairs. They shared two videos – Extreme Ironing which was created with a focus on community and Sit Less Move More with whiteboard animation. They are currently holding a 72-hour challenge. You can download your card from their website. Healthy Campus Initiative (Lisa) – Goals: 1) Be active, 2) Eat healthy, 3) Manage stress, 4) Smokefree OSU. They are adding a fifth goal around Building community. They are working on broadening partnerships to support programs going on. Counseling & Psychological Services (Michele & Bonnie) – They are hoping to build on the mental health initiative by adding a marketing position (½ with CAPS and ½ with Healthy Campus Initiative) for 2015-16. They held an open house during CONNECT Week and had around 200 students attend. World Mental Health Week starts Oct. 10. They have many partners. On Friday, Oct. 10 there will be tabling in the MU Quad. The world theme is schizophrenia. They are also highlighting depression and anxiety. There is a week of events. In January they are planning a campaign – Join the Mental Fitness Movement. They have a succeed model focusing on stress management. There are four parts: 1) create, 2) energize, 3) excel, 4) determine. They will be having four events. Two are scheduled so far – excel on January 8 and create on October 27. Their main goal is to form partnerships, so everyone is working on mental health. University Housing & Dining Services (Natalie) – The Tebeau Hall dedication is Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. They are holding a Fall Food Festival next Saturday. They are working to use more natural and local ingredients in their menus. They are also creating partnerships with local farms to add to menus and to Cascadia Market. They are trying it first at Zephyro’s Pizza in McNary Dining Center. Their goal is that all dining centers will feature local ingredients. They are doing a signage sweep through their dining halls and residence halls. They are working to have consistent signage throughout. They have added nutrition kiosks in the dining centers. They are iPads that those with dietary needs can use to build a meal. They show the nutritional facts of a meal. If someone is vegan, vegetarian or gluten free the kiosk will display only those items the person can eat. They have also added Better Bites, wholesome nutritious items. They also have Make Sense, wholesome entrée items for under $3. MU Retail Food Service (Jen) – They now have 10 locations. They opened Trader Bing’s in Austin Hall in September. North Porch Café in the MU has its Grand Opening on October 6-7. The creator of the sauces will be presenting on October 7 at 2 p.m. in the MU Horizon Room. Her talk is titled “Live Long Pho.” They are in talks about a possible cooking presentation, as well. They transferred their website to Drupal 7. Any feedback is welcome. They have added two new employees, so the department is growing. They will be at the Be Well 5K Run Walk ‘N Roll with Orange Rewards. They also have vendors coming to the Beaver Community Fair with samples. Human Services Resource Center (Clare) – They focus on poverty, homelessness and food insecurity. They are launching a new farm to pantry initiative. They will be hosting cooking, canning and gardening demos. They are also working on textbook and low cost housing programs. They hope to offer free tax service and a food recovery program for on-campus food. They are building more online offers, so users of their services do not have to come into the office. New Student Programs & Family Outreach (Ruth) –More than 9,000 students and family members came through during START. The OSU Guide has about 11,000 downloads. There were close to 3,000 for the CONNECT Guide. It received good feedback. U-Engage has 30 sections. They are also offering student success series workshops for U-Engage students and a few others. There are 56 offerings. They will help connect students to offices and support services. Office of Equity & Inclusion (Binh) – They are starting preparations for the MLK, Jr. Celebration, a two-week celebration in January. There will be a planning committee that will meet throughout the fall to pick a theme and plan events. There are usually about 20 events during the two weeks. The Peace Breakfast is held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a keynote speaker. Student Affairs Research, Evaluation & Planning (Vanessa) – The MSL (Multiinstitutional student learning) survey will launch on February 15. She would like to talk further about how departments can market to increase student participation. It will be an online survey. University Housing & Dining Services (Jennifer) - The Tebeau Hall dedication is Thursday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. About 190 friends and members of the Tebeau family will attend. They are working on a re-branding project, trying to deepen partnerships. There is new art in Bing’s in Weatherford. It is a collaboration with the Art Department. They are livening up the lounge space in Cauthorn Hall in collaboration with a class. They are also working on the UHDS Brand while still allowing halls to have their own look. Memorial Union (Kent) – Represents the SEAC, MUPC, ISOSU, CCE and SSI. They have several student-run programs occurring fall term. The Beaver Community Fair is Friday and will have 135 booths in the MU Quad. Dad’s Weekend is November 7-9. They are working on a construction project with graphic elements and artwork. The MU opened in 1927. They have added new signage throughout the building over the summer. By the end of the year they will meet full ADA requirements except the rotunda. The rotunda project will be a joint partnership with funding coming from students, the OSU Foundation and the University accessibility dollars. They launched their Drupal 7 website. Carolyn shared information on the It’s On Us campaign. It is to reframe the way people view sexual assault and establish an environment where sexual assault is unacceptable. One in five women in college experiences sexual assault. It is a White House Campaign Initiative (itsonus.org). You can go online to take the pledge. They hope to have individuals embrace the campaign. They are looking at how to incorporate information into the Student Affairs website. They will have a discussion at SALT. She is interested in further discussion about how to get the word out to students.
