Charge for the International Education Working Group March 2010 Preparing students for success in a global society is explicit in RIT’s vision, and the university has been successful in attracting and enrolling students from abroad. In addition, over the past decade the university has made significant progress in building an international network of campuses, educational alliances, and research partnerships in support of its vision. Despite this success, there remain many opportunities to further enrich and expand the international experiences available to our students, faculty, and staff. Opportunities exist to broaden and creatively develop new study abroad programs; to leverage our partnerships and campuses abroad; to enrich international dimensions of our curriculum; to foster international cooperative education programs; and, to develop international service learning, research, and outreach projects. In an effort to support the continued advancement of international education, the Provost has established a cross-divisional intercollegiate International Education Working Group. The general goals of this working group are: 1. To ensure communication across the divisions and among the units engaged in 2. 3. 4. 5. international education initiatives. To serve as an advisory committee to the Provost; to the Study Abroad Office; to the International Education Committee and the Global Delivery Corporation on issues related to academic programming, policy, and assessment of international education. To provide functional support for international education initiatives of the Provost; the International Education Committee and the Global Delivery Corporation. To advise and support divisions of the university in the dissemination of RIT’s accomplishments and leadership in international education. To further the development of on-campus international education opportunities for students and faculty. The Working Group’s specific charge for 2010 is: 1. To propose a business plan for Study Abroad and make specific recommendations regarding: a. Models and policies for funding and management of RIT faculty led and affiliated programs; b. How to optimally utilize RIT’s global campuses and partnerships to support the development of faculty led programming; c. Strategies for attaining the goals for study abroad participation set out by the Board of Trustees 2. Recommend student learning outcomes related to international education. These recommendations should give consideration to the global experiences, outcomes, and capabilities that will distinguish RIT students from their peers at other institutions. 3. Draft a fifteen year “road map” for the expansion of international education at RIT. 4. Elicit participation of additional members to ensure adequate representation across each of the colleges and among students. 5. To assist, where possible, with the support of our global campuses in Dubai, Croatia, and Kosovo. 6. To assist, where possible, with the development of new space in Global Village dedicated to serving the international educational needs of the students, faculty and staff at RIT. International Education Working Group In formulating recommendations, the group will actively seek input from across the RIT community, including the leadership and students of RIT’s global campuses, partner institutions, and governing bodies.
