CRITICISM
• Criticism: feedback offered for the purpose
of improving a speaker’s presentation or
speech.
• All criticism contains three parts:
1. Judgments
2. Reasons
3. Norms

• Judgments: critics’ opinions about the
relative merits of a presentation or speech;
the most common and superficial level of
speech criticism.
• Reasons: statements that justify a critic’s
judgments.
• Norms: the values a critic believes
necessary to make any speech or
presentation good, effective, or desirable.

9 GUIDELINES FOR CRITIQUING
PRESENTATIONS OR SPEECHES:
1. Begin with a positive statement.
2. Be specific.
3. Be honest but tactful.
4. Personalize your comments.
