Nyoman Nuarta was born in the small town of
Tabanan, Bali, on November 14, 1951 into a
successful and notable business family. He
received his earliest education from a highly
disciplined (and strict disciplinarian) uncle who
was a 'Kelihan Adat'.
Consider sculpture is his life and raison d’etre,
Nuarta completed high school in Bali and later
graduated from the Bandung Institute of
Technology (ITB) in 1979. Now he lives in
Bandung with his wife is Cynthia L. Nuarta and
two daughters are Tania and Tasya.
Even in his early chilhood the prevailing religious
and cultural environment in Bali caused him to be
involved in the cultural and artistic activities of his
home town in which he enjoyed the full support
and encouragement of Ketut Dharma Susila, his
drawing teacher, the first person to introduce him
into the world of fine arts.
His professional career started while he was a
student, when he joined the 'Gerakan Seni Rupa
Baru Indonesia' (the Indonesian New Art
Movement) in 1977 with his best friends Hardi,
Dede Eri Supria, Harsono and art critiques Jim
Supangkat, participated in group’s exhibitions in
Bandung and Jakarta. In recognition of his earliest
creations, the statue of Indonesian Proclamators,
he received an award from Presiden Soeharto in
1979.
In the future development of his career, after
having overcome
many obstacles,
Nuarta
succeeded in establishing a group of professionals
supported by young artists and served by some
40 personnel under a professional management
system.

2001, Garuda Alighted on GWK Hill

Since the idea of Mandala Garuda Wisnu Kencana project was launched
to the public in 1993, Government of Indonesia had demonstrated its
strong commitment to give the supports. Through the Bali Tourism
Development Corporation, supports given in share holding of 18% from
the development project of the park. But, the monetary crises and
political situation then influenced this project to inevitably slow down.
This project finally had survived to move on, even without any loan from
banks in the amount of worth. Polemics arose pro and contra upon
existence of this project. However, fund rising held by Garuda Wisnu
Kencana Foundation, was successful to gather several companies and
entrepreneurs in this country, who had shared vision in making a
dedication for this country and the future generations.
Slowly but sure, this project walked slowly, and through the years of
monetary crises, this project was as if forgotten. Something catch on
mind when people were asked about this project was about the burned
down of developing construct of ''Garuda''s head at Studio Nyoman
Nuarta in Bandung, in 1997 . It's not for every people to know, that the
tragedy did not make any reason to stop effort of realization of the
project. Saved by technical process, the reconstruction moved on and

only took two weeks to establish. Meanwhile, the construction of God
Wisnu statue started.
It is at the end of second millennium, to coincide with the turn of the
Millennium, Garuda Wisnu Kencana Foundation decided to make a
socialization of the realization by opening the project to the public of
approximately 5% from the total area. It may also be looked upon as
the debut of the physical structure of the Mandala GWK cultural park.
This stage namely GWK Expo 2000, is also exhibiting the 15% of the
Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue with the 22 meter-high the God Wisnu
statue , as the anchor.
Begin in August 1999, the construction of GWK EXPO 2000 which
consisting of amphitheatre, street theatre, exhibition hall, café and
restaurants, run after the time to prepare the event ''Bali Artventures
2000'' on 31 December 1999. The event was held here as the initiation
of this expo that presenting to the public in all over the world through
150 television stations in 48 countries.
Nowadays, after a year time of socialization, government and the people
of Indonesia turn their head again to this project. Indonesian Legislative
Council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Indonesia) through Komisi IV
(Commission of Tourism) proposed the government to support speeding
up the finishing of the project. Government of Indonesia through the
Ministry of Culture and Tourism was responded and willing to support
the next stage of development in 2001, by giving the supports for the
development construction of Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue.
This effort furthermore, was followed by the extended development, as
in mid 2001 several parts of the Garuda statue planned to move from
Studio Nyoman Nuarta, Bandung to Mandala Garuda Wisnu Kencana
Cultural Park , at the Ungasan hill in Bali. The Part of Garuda statue
which have been ready to move are the head and the body. Another part
statue of mythical bird Garuda still on going process with it's wing in
Bandung with the width of 66 meters. The attraction of reconstruction
with the welding process would be seen at the park, since the middle of
2001. Every people from all over the world can watch and enjoy the
process of statue construction that will become as the symbol of cultural
communication and environmental of the world, with a 146 meters high.
The development of the whole project is estimated to be finished in the
year of 2005.
If you had ever come to the Mandala Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural
Park during the year of 2000, don't miss it, to come again this year, as
the 'Garuda' alighted on GWK Hill. Or maybe, to you who never heard or
come to this project, this is opportunity for you to be the witness on the
process of the creation pillar of our future generation history.
