University Counselling Service (UCS) – Considering Counselling
First meeting
At UCS we aim to see you as soon as possible for a 30 minute “Initial Interview”. Here you
can discuss what is troubling you as well as the kind of support which may be helpful with
a member of the clinical team.
Therapy
We will then refer you to either Psychodynamic or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as
appropriate. This is likely to be with a new therapist. Alternatively, you may like to join
the therapy group or the eating disorders group.
Workshops
We also offer an alcohol and drug counselling programme, together with workshops for:
depression, anxiety & stress management and confidence & assertiveness. Please ask at
Reception for details.
While you are waiting
We realise that having to wait for a few weeks for your first appointment can feel very
difficult and if you feel your situation is deteriorating please:
 Consider attending one of the workshops
 Contact your doctor.
 Book yourself a “Single Session”, bookable on the day or for the next day.
 Get back in touch with us in case there has been a cancellation.
Self Help
You might also like to try some of the on-line help systems available.
Specifically we recommend ‘the CALM Relief series a free web based self help
programme available from our web page:
