2 nd Cycle October 26-December 17, 2015

****Our second Unit of Study is divided into 3 sections, each approximately 3 weeks. We assess daily, weekly, and periodically.

****Our third district SNAPSHOT will be the week of Nov. 16-19. SNAPSHOTS tell us what your child has learned and what we need to reteach so your child will be successful on STAAR in May.

Poetry Unit Overview : During this unit, students will be introduced to the genre of poetry. Poetry is the arrangement of words in lines that have rhythm, or a regularly repeated accent, and often rhyme. It is often highly imaginative or emotional and expresses deep feelings and thoughts. The language in a poem provides a fresh, unexpected way of looking at things. This effect is achieved with descriptive words and figures of speech such as similes and metaphors.

Students will create their own poems.

Drama Unit Overview:

Drama consists of plays, or stories written to be performed by actors for an audience. Plays have the same story elements as fiction: characters, setting, pot, and theme. The stage directions define the play’s setting, describing how the stage is designed and decorated, and also describe characters and their actions. In a play, dialogue consists of the words said by the characters and appears after the name of the character speaking. Dialogue advances the play’s plot. For writing, students will write personal narratives.

Persuasive Text Unit Overview: Persuasive text presents evidence to convince the reader to take certain action or to believe something. Authors use persuasive language to influence readers emotionally. The evidence will include both facts and opinions. A statement of fact can be proved true or false by looking in a reference work, observing directly, or checking with an expert in the field. A statement of opinion expresses a personal judgment or belief that cannot be proved true or false. However, it may be supported well by facts or logic. As for comprehension, students are explaining the difference between stated and implied main ideas and recognizing and using text features. Students will continue working on expository text and write expository compositions.

During every unit, our students are summarizing, making inferences, making connections, and developing vocabulary through context clues and dictionary study.

Please help your child develop his/her reading by developing a Reading Routine!
