It's Time to Start Your Job Search

It’s Time to Start Your Job Hunt!!
If your goal is to teach this fall, now is the time to start your job search.
We recommend starting your job search in early spring. Please do not limit yourself to just the large
districts. There are many smaller districts in our area. The only limiting factor is it must be an
accredited Texas school and you must be in commuting distance to complete your coursework.
In addition to submitting many applications, plan to attend all job fairs. (At this time, there is only one
scheduled in Texarkana area.) Bring plenty of copies of your resumes, dress professional; submit
employment applications online prior to attending. Many of our students have found it helpful to make
a professional portfolio.
Employment Applications
Complete ISD applications online:



TISD (Texarkana ISD) requires their on application.
School District Websites: Most of the school districts have their own websites where you may
complete their application or follow a link to the Region 8 application.
Region 8 Easy Application: Click on Region 8 (Easy Consortium). Most (not all) other school
districts accept.
Job Postings
You may view jobs postings on below websites:




Region 8 - Even districts that do not accept the Region 8 application usually post job opening on
this website.
ISD Websites - Post job openings on their own website and Region 8. Link to many ISD
Websites.
TEA has a site where you can search for jobs. Just type in the zip code and select the number of
miles of the location. It pulls up a list of districts and links to their website and human resources
page. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/districtSearch.aspx
Texas A&M University-Texarkana has two sites to visit for job postings. Symplicity and
http://www.tamut.edu/Academics/Student-Support/Career-Services/index.html.
Resume and Cover Letter
You will need a resume and a cover letter to send with your applications and also to hand out at job
fairs. Below are some suggestions.


See attached sample resume and cover letter. Resumes and cover letters are a great place to
add information that cannot be included in an application such as TExES tests you have passed,
whether you qualify for a probationary teaching certificate or will qualify for a standard
certificate during the summer. Resumes should be 1-2 pages with bulleted statements rather
than paragraphs. Double check grammar and spelling.
There are many templates in Microsoft Word for resumes, cover letters, etc. Click on the Office
Button in the top left corner, New, Office Online, Resumes. After finding a template you like,
print it out. Then type your own in Word to look similar to the template. You can use the actual

template, but templates have lots of formatting that can be difficult to work with. Please note
tips from by our presenters.
Another resource is our Student Life - Career Services Department. You may visit a Career
Service counselor in our Student Success Center on the 3rd floor for assistance.
Professional Portfolio

Make a comprehensive portfolio and place in a professional looking binder with printed tabs.
This will be yours to keep and possibly show to principals that are interested in hiring you. It can
be updated and added to over the years.
 Suggested items to include:
o Resume, cover letter, proof of TExES content test(s) you have passed, letters of
reference, transcripts, standard teaching certificate, etc.
o For students in the Graduate Alternative Certification Program (ACP) include
statement of eligibility and letter of admittance from program. If you have not
received these items, contact Debbie.hopkins@tamut.edu to see what items
you are missing.
o You may also wish to make a condensed version to hand out at interviews or to
principals. Suggestion – Use a clear front report holder containing only the most
pertinent documents for the position for which you are applying.
