EWRT1A Composition and Reading Agenda • Conference Announcement (Extra Credit) • Essay 3: Outline • Essay 1: Language Use Workshops Extra Credit • You can receive up to 20 points of extra credit for attending the Your Story Our Movement conference on Friday. Extra Credit • To get credit you need to attend the welcome/breakfast, a morning workshop and an afternoon workshop. • You also need to write a one-page write-up describing your experience and the workshops you participated in. Essay 3 • Essay 3 will be an analytical essay about a YouTube video. • In this video you will explain what the video means for a particular audience. The question is this: “What does this video mean?” Essay 3 • You should like the video, and you should consider yourself part of the audience. • The audience forms a community. • You will be representing yourself as part of a community, and you will be representing this community. Essay 3 • Your analysis will be of both the video itself and the audience. • Try to explain why this audience is interested in the video. • What makes the video meaningful for this audience. Essay 3 • The video should have had at least 25,000 views. Essay 3 • The big challenge will be unifying your essay. How are the different parts of your essay related to your thesis? • Transitions will be a key tool for you to unify your essay. • You will need to do some research for your essay. Essay 3 • Possible parts of your essay: – The Community – Background – The Video Itself – Community Interpretation Essay 3 • The Community (possibly the introduction) – Your thesis answers the following question: What does the video mean for a particular community? – General points about the audience (brief) – The segment of the audience that you belong to – The significance of the video for your segment Essay 3 • Background – The creator of the video (possibly the channel) – The subject of the video (for example, the performers) – Many performers have Wikipedia pages Essay 3 • The Video Itself – General points about the visual style of the video – Plot summary – Music and sound Essay 3 • Community Interpretation (over one page) – Explanation (you should rely on comments from the video) – Identify what is important for the community • Dialogue that stands out • Important shots • Music and sound – Identify the objective of the video and the orientation that the video suggests for the community – Criticism (does the video point the community in a positive direction?) Essay 3 • Rough Drafts will be due next Thursday. • A reading journal assignment is due over the weekend. • Let’s watch some videos. Language Use Workshops • If you received a B or above for language use on your essay you can leave if you want. • We will rewrite a paragraph from someone’s essay. • We also need to schedule times for the small-group workshops. • I will confirm these with you over e-mail.
