• Explicit comparative analysis
• Selection of ‘best performance’ standard for products,
services, or practices
• Represent what the best any individual or group can do
• Used as a target or goal to be achieved
• Used for firm wanting to achieve ‘world class’
performance in IT acquisition
• Not a one-time process improvement, but long-term
program called continuous improvement

Benchmarking Procedures
• Establish a benchmarking team to oversee the
implementation of benchmarking process
• Identify the activities or processes requiring improvement
• Identify ‘best performance’ activity or process and
measures
• Collect data on current operation activities and perform
comparative analysis
• Establish a set of recommended process changes
• Follow up

Gap Analysis
• To help managers identify and clearly communicate
areas where differences between benchmarks and
actual performance may exist
• Allows member of organization to evaluate the
performance in achieving benchmarks or any goals
• Gap chart can compare organization’s actual
performance on the basis of where they are and where
they desire
