Potential Client/Project Guidelines
As a potential client for a TWRT 64 group project, you have the opportunity to work with a group of capable
students who will complete a project for you throughout this quarter. You do not have to teach these students –
you simply act as their client by communicating project goals, meeting with students and answering questions,
and providing a client evaluation when the project ends. These students are accomplished, educated, and
professional, so you will have a wealth of knowledge, skills, and creativity at your service!
TWRT 64 is the most advanced course, and is the final course for most students, in the technical writing
department. To enhance their vocational and collaborative skills, TWRT 64 students work in groups of 2-4 to
complete a project for a real client with a real need. These real clients are often De Anza faculty and staff that
have a need for their department or service that could be a project for TWRT 64 students.
Course Objectives
TWRT 64 focuses on applying skills learned throughout the program to plan and execute a real-world
technical writing project in a team environment. Projects may be drawn from the needs of other departments
on campus, special projects requested by nonprofit groups, or tasks related to the students' chosen fields.
Deliverables may include curriculum or program development, equipment manuals, user guides, Web sites,
newsletters, online documentation, website and logo creation, and other forms of technical writing. The
students will:


Learn and practice team communication skills and collaborative work strategies.
Participate on a publication team in the design and production of a camera ready document
(approximately 50+ pages) or other appropriate product, including selecting and evaluating graphics,
type, and paper. This final product is a collaborative project such as a newsletter, monograph, or
online materials such as web pages or online documentation.
Project Requirements
Not all project ideas will work for the course objectives. Potential TWRT 64 projects must be in-depth and
work-intensive in order for students to effectively set goals and deadlines, communicate, collaborate, budget,
and problem solve. TWRT 64 projects:





Require enough work to occupy a group of 2-4 people with 10 hours of work per person per week
throughout the quarter.
Require a camera ready document (approximately 50+ pages) or camera ready technical materials
such as newsletters, monographs, or online materials such as web pages or online documentation.
Require students to meet with you (the client) to monitor progress and quality at least once a week
from Week 3 to Week 10.
Require you (the client) to review two drafts before the final is due.
Require a client evaluation when the project ends.
In the past, successful projects have included:



Creating websites, logos, and description for all branches of the Student Success Center.
Writing instructions for using MS Word 2007.
Overhauling a course curriculum.

Creating an entire course on grant writing including teaching materials, assignment descriptions, and
samples.
Creating a guide for WRC tutors.
Creating journalism curriculum.
Creating Puente program marketing materials.
Writing user’s guides for creating online portfolios.
Creating a website for a program or department.
So, go ahead! Think of some of those projects you have wanted to tackle but do not know where to start.
