Discussion
I. Approval of Agenda and the 2/6/13 minutes
A. Agenda approved with no objections
B. One change to 2/6/13 minutes. Correct date of FELI training to reflect August 12 – 16th.
C. 2/6/13 minutes approved
II. RP Report on Student Support (Re)defined
A. Karen – they basically interviewed 900 students across the state with a particular focus on African-Americans
and Latino students to have them give feedback as far as what worked for them in order to achieve student
success.
B. Mallory passed out a handout that summarized the study and gave highlights
1. Broken down into 5 areas
a) student motivation
b) teach students how to be successful
c) highlight the value of student supports
d) provide comprehensive support to underrepresented populations
e) emphasize the importance of the campus community
2. Particularly emphasized the role of faculty members and the importance of their support since the students
see them regularly
C. Karen opened it up to the members for discussion and to give any feedback that can be taken back to the group
going to Las Positas on March 29th
D. Rowena – At the Las Positas meeting, there is going to be a discussion amongst the various colleges around
what’s in the report and then there is going to be a discussion around other student support that is cost
effective and sustainable. So the feedback we’re looking for would be to list some of the interventions that
we’ve been moving on and encouraging.
E. Rowena – What would be ideal is if we could have conversations happening across the divisions and also in the
instructional divisions with the faculty amongst themselves about some of these findings. It’s a call out to
campus partner groups and maybe since we are all ambassadors for this work to bring to our departments and
divisions.
F. Karen will send the reports out to all faculty.
G. Karen – DARE members, please think about where in your areas you can bring this back and discuss with
colleagues.
III. BSI Action Expenditure Plan
A. Members were asked at the last meeting to look over the BSI Action Expenditure Plan to discuss at this
meeting.
B. Karen read through ESL/Basic Skills Action Plan 4b – main motivation is that the two project groups find a
concrete activity that we can embark upon this year to fund. This could be a goal for todays group meetings.
Hopefully can get report from Rob on their HS Outreach to the Fremont Union High School District at the next
DARE meeting.
C. Karen – Something to think about looking at is the gender equity gap that seems to emerge in both basic skills
Writing and Math success rates. Or possibly do it by ethnicity as well.
