I just have something inside me that tells me that there is a problem and I have to do something about it. And I am sure that it is the same voice that is speaking to everyone on this planet, at least everybody who seems to be concerned about the fate of the world, the fate of this planet”. Nobel Peace Prize 2004, Kenya’s Greenbelt Movement Students Faculty Staff Community What We Can Do Here at De Anza CEAG feels that at De Anza College we have a responsibility to teach students, faculty, staff, administrators and community about sustainability (“greener” spaces increase health, happiness and productivity). CEAG is setting the stage as leaders of the community with the creation of the Sustainability Management Plan (SMP). Students Faculty Staff Community Students Faculty Staff Community Students Faculty Staff Community Students Faculty Staff Community Setting the Stage for an SMP • People make things happen, and the CEAG accomplishments owe much to the leadership and efforts of many at De Anza, some who have retired or moved on. • There is a sense that we wanted to institutionalize that leadership and our sustainability efforts, if possible • We have the curriculum to do this! Students Faculty Staff Community Setting the Stage for an SMP • Environmental Studies Department has become a more robust influence since the Kirsch Centered opened • ES certificate and degree programs – Biodiversity Specialist – Environmental Stewardship – Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention – Energy Management and Climate Policy – Recent fifth Wildlife Corridor Technician certificate program Students Faculty Staff Community Setting the Stage for an SMP • Combine CEAG’s tradition of environmental leadership with De Anza’s other organizations that support sustainability – Institute of Community and Civic Engagement, Office of Diversity, Outreach and Retention, DASB and Student Clubs • CEAG positioned to seek shared governance approval for a process to better manage and measure De Anza’s environmental, economic, and social equity footprint Students Faculty Staff Community History of EMS/SMP Discussion • Developed through CEAG and E.S. 62A-D courses on EMS starting in 2005 • ES 62A-D taught by Ed Quevedo, an EMS consultant • Creation of SMP managed through student, faculty, staff and community volunteers • Uses ISO 14001 international standard organization framework • Policy and Sustainability Management Plan approved in 2007 • We are now in implementation phase Students Faculty Staff Community About the SMP Process Supports environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socioeconomic needs ISO 14001 goal is to apply for certification/registration, to document efforts We want to go beyond compliance We want to nurture and expand sustainability efforts and performance Students Faculty Staff Community SMP Based on ISO 14001 EMS Uses Plan – Do – Check – Act Cycle • PLAN: Set objectives • DO: Implement processes • CHECK: Monitor, measure and report • ACT: Continually improve performance • ISO 14001 provides a whole set of criteria for meeting certification Students Faculty Staff Community 3 Phases of the SMP Process Designing and Planning Gaining Support and Operationalizing Checking and Validating the Operation and Continuous Improvement More details on the SMP Web site but briefly here is the outline for the plan SMS/SMP process Students Faculty Staff Community Phase 1 – Design and Plan Sustainability Policy Environmental Aspects Legal and Other Requirements Objectives, Targets and Programs Students Faculty Staff Community Phase 2 – Gain Support/Operationalize • Resources, Roles, Responsibility and Authority • Competence, Training and Awareness • Communication • Documentation • Documentation Control • Management Controls and Responses Students Faculty Staff Community Phase 3 – Check/Validate the Operation • Monitoring and Measurement • Evaluation of Compliance • Nonconformity, Corrective Action and Preventive Action • Control of Records • Internal Audit • Management Review Students Faculty Staff Community Phase 1 – Designing and Planning Sustainability Policy www.deanza.edu/news/sustainability-policy.html Environmental Aspects Baseline assessment in 2006 Dining Services Example SMP Team determined 7 areas of focus Legal and Other Requirements Objectives, Targets and Programs • This is what we are working on today Students Faculty Staff Community Seven SMP Areas of Focus • • • • Green Building Construction and Renovation Community and Civic Engagement Hazardous and Solid Waste Reduction and Control Energy Conservation, Efficiency and CO2 Reduction • Water Use Reduction and Control • Green Purchasing and Procurement Controls in the College Supply Chain • Ecologically Responsible Landscaping, Installation and Maintenance Students Faculty Staff Community How can we each participate? • The EMS ISO 14001 framework includes creation of action plans, based on areas of focus aspects and impacts – – – – – www.deanza.edu/sustainability/smp/action.html Students Faculty Staff Community This is where we all play a part in the process! Students Faculty Staff Community How do we create action plans? • With limited resources, we’ve struggled with this next step • We looked toward other institutions, including AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education • Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) • Joe Cooke will talk about our participation in this process Students Faculty Staff Community Dining Services on Campus • Award winning program • Cutlery and containers are 100% biodegradable • “Fair-trade” coffee • Buy from local organic farmers, use hormone-free meats • Composting program used for herbs grown on campus, which are then harvested and used by Dining Services. Students Faculty Staff Community Bookstore goes green, too! • Used Textbooks - wholesaler resells several times instead of always buying newly printed copies (saves trees, reduces use of chemicals, reduces landfills) • Textbook Rentals - same idea but at a lower cost to students also reduces freight shipments to and from bookstores. • Recycled products - water bottles, notebooks, backpacks, clothing.
