Plot
• Plot is the sequence of incidents or events of which a
story is composed.
• A plot might consist merely of a sequence of related
actions.
• In a plot there are conflicts: a clash of actions, ideas,
desires, or wills.
• The central character in the conflict are protagonist and
antagonist

Plot
• A good plot has suspense
• Suspense is the quality in a story that makes readers
ask “What’s going to happen next?”
• Two common devices for achieving suspense are
introduce an element of mystery and dilemma
• Closely connected with the element of suspense in a
short story is the element of surprise.

Ending
• Surprise ending: one that reveals a sudden new turn or
twist.
• Happy ending: when the protagonist solve his problems,
defeat the villain, win the girl, “live happily ever after”.
• Unhappy ending
• Indeterminate ending
• Artistic unity: nothing in the story that is irrelevant, that
does not contribute to the total meaning.
