NevadaFIT (Freshman Intensive Transition) is a five-day academic program designed to prepare incoming freshman for the expectations of being a college student, while helping them successfully transition into their first semester at University of Reno, Nevada NevadaFIT 2016 August 21 (Sunday) to August 25 (Thursday) NEVADA FIT: PURPOSE & STRUCTURE • Purpose & Goals of Nevada FIT • Students are enrolled in 1 credit ACE 110 course (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) • Evaluation based on full participation • 10 Bootcamps • BizFIT (College of Business) • BMB-FIT (CABNR) • NRES-FIT (CABNR) • VAS-FIT (CABNR) • E-FIT (College of Engineering) • FIT2Care (College of Education) • HealthFIT (Community Health Science) • J-FIT (Journalism) • PsychFIT (College of Liberal Arts) • ScienceFIT (College of Science) • All incoming College of Science students are required to participate in ScienceFIT NEVADA FIT PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS • Students are expected to.. • Attend and fully participate in all activities (lectures, study groups, skills sessions, etc.) • Be engaged • Follow university policies • Learn from their experience Pack Mentors play a critical role in making sure students understand and meet these expectations PACK MENTORS: ROLES & EXPECTATIONS • NevadaFIT feedback from past participants • NevadaFIT experience and the role pack mentors play • Stress • Overwhelmed • Feelings of anxiety • Each Pack Mentor is assigned 6 freshmen within major • Pack Mentors must be able to commit to the daily schedules and be available to their pack • NevadaFIT sample schedule PACK MENTORS: ROLE & EXPECTATIONS • Pack Mentors are role-models & guides • Math course- help students figure out how be a successful student (not expected to be a math tutor) • Facilitate study skills workshops, pack mentor sessions, work one-on-one with students when appropriate • Role-model how to be a successful student (classroom etiquette, time management, how to address professors, etc.) • As a Pack Mentor, you are expected to be professional (social media etiquette) • Pack mentors will be compensated with a stipend NEVADAFIT SPEAKERS • Past NevadaFIT Pack Mentors • Ashley Sharp, 2015 BizFIT • Allie Beal, 2015 FIT2Care • Mikayla Baillie, 2015 E-FIT • Pierce Baker, 2015 J-FIT • Kim Gilliland, BMB-FIT • Past Participant • Andrew Arballo, ScienceFIT PACK MENTOR ORIENTATION • General orientation will cover basic policies and how to be an effective mentor: FERPA, Sexual Harassment, how to assist students when they are distressed, making campus resource referrals, central schedule, and more • Break out sessions for specialized training with your college • Orientation and training will be a full day event, so plan to commit for the full day If your selected as Pack Mentor, attendance is mandatory!
