Study after study confirms the value of high-quality early childhood
experience for developing the cognitive, social and emotional skills
that children need to succeed in Kindergarten. But, unless children
attend these programs on a regular basis, they are not likely to
benefit fully. At Fonwood, we reward students who come to school
regularly because we believe that attendance in Pre-K lays the
foundation for a child’s future attendance habits and academic
performance.
To reward students who come to school every school day each
month, tickets will be given to them for a chance to win a bicycle
during the End-of-Year Celebration in May. Parents and caregivers
will also be recognized for their efforts in bringing their children to
school every day. Special lunches and drawings will be held at the
end of each month where grocery baskets and other wonderful
prizes will be given out.
Going to school every day matters for success in school and life!
A Warm Welcome to Fonwood ECC!
On September 15th, 16th, and 17th, Fonwood administrators and
teaching staff warmly welcomed family members and friends as
they visited with their children’s teachers for a night of Open
House. The main objective of the Open House was for teachers
and families to create a personal connection and set the stage
for continued communication throughout the school year.
Thank you to all those who came and we look forward to your
presence in upcoming family involvement activities!

had the opportunity to have lunch with their cubs as a
small token of appreciation for the special roles each
grandparent plays in our students’ lives.
Jumpstart's Read for the Record at
FONWOOD
Every year, children and adults worldwide participate
in the world’s largest shared reading experience called
Read for the Record. This year, Read for the Record
will be celebrated at Fonwood on Thursday, October
22nd. On this day, very special guests from the
community will visit classrooms and read the book
“Not Norman: A Goldfish Story” to our PK-4 and PK-3
students. This book which is written by Kelly Bennett
and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones is a humorous tale
about a child who finds a new friend in an unexpected
place. Parents or caregivers who would like to
volunteer to read to our PK students can call the office
at 713-633-0781. Fonwood will help break the world
reading record (again!) for the most people reading
the same book on the same day!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR
READ ACROSS THE GLOBE
at FONWOOD
On Monday, October 19th, Kindergarten
students at Fonwood will participate in the
Read Across the Globe initiative. This
initiative aims to break the Guinness World
Record for the number of children read to
within a 24-hour period. The book that will be
read to our Kindergarten students is “Farmer
Will Allen and the Growing Table” which is
about a former basketball player who became
a farmer. This activity will help inspire the
love of reading and promote awareness of the
importance of literacy in our students.

COMMUNITY HELPERS DAY
To culminate our unit of study about people in the
community, Fonwood ECC will be celebrating Community
Helpers Day on Thursday, October 22nd, 2015. We would
like to invite our parents and other family members and
friends to come to our school to do a presentation to our
students about what they do at their jobs.
If you can come, please fill out the form that your child
will be taking home today and send it back to your child’s
teacher on or before Monday, October 6. As soon as we
hear back from you, we will send you a note to confirm the
time of your presentation. You can also call the school at
713-633-0781 and talk to Mrs. Lacanlale or Mrs. Newton
about your availability.
Thank you so much for your continued support in your
child’s education!
To celebrate COMMUNITY HELPERS DAY, students
may come to school dressed as their favorite
community helper on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22nd,
2015!
Evidence suggests that family engagement matters
for student success. At Fonwood, there are several
opportunities for families to take an active role in
their children’s education. One very important
activity is attendance at the Academic Parent
Teacher Team (APTT) meetings. The APTT meetings
at Fonwood are held three times throughout the
year where teachers meet at once with all parents
in their classroom. Each parent is provided with a
folder of their child’s performance indicators.
Teachers then provide an in-depth coaching session
on how to interpret this data based on overall
classroom performance, school benchmarks, and
state standards. Parents are provided with
strategies and tools to help support learning at
home, and together, families and teachers set goals
for their students, individually and as a class.
Please refer to the PAWS Events Calendar for
October for your team’s APPT schedule.
