Course Title:
VN 75 Nursing Care of Patients with Endocrine Problems
Course Description: This course focuses on the use of the nursing process in caring for
individuals with disturbances of the pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands.
The pathophysiology, assessment data, nursing problems, medical and nursing interventions for
the patients with endocrine problems will be discussed. This course is open to students enrolled
in the Vocational Nursing Program and is required for Vocational Nursing licensure.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. The vocational nursing student will be able to apply the nursing process to patients with a
variety of endocrine disorders.
2. The vocational nursing student will acquire basic knowledge of normal and abnormal
function of the endocrine system.
3. The vocational nursing student will apply the nursing process in providing care for the
patient with Diabetes Mellitus.
4. The vocational nursing student will identify the hormones, their location and function,
and signs and symptoms of disorders within the endocrine system.
Course Objectives:
1. Identify the diagnostic tests for endocrine disorders and the patient preparation needed.
2. Identify the hormones, purpose, function, signs and symptoms of disorders for the
pituitary gland.
3. Identify the hormones, purpose, function, signs and symptoms of disorders for the thyroid
and parathyroids.
4. Identify the hormones, purpose, function, signs and symptoms of disorders for the
adrenal glands.
5. Identify the hormones, purpose, function, signs and symptoms of disorders for the
pancreas.
6. Describe appropriate nursing assessment, interventions and evaluations for patients with
disorders of the endocrine system.
Course Units/Hours:
1 Unit. Lecture: Total of 18 hours.
Course Prerequisites:
Completion of VN 61 or VN 52 with a grade of C or better.
