ESW Open Seminar Series Centre for Social Work Innovation and Research (C-SWIR) Monday 26th October, 5pm Room 104, Fulton Speaker Yasin Koc, Doctoral researcher in the School of Psychology & Graduate Teaching/Research Assistant for C-SWIR, University of Sussex, presents: Researching Gender and Sexual Identities: Insights from social psychology for social work research and practice ____________________________________ Theorising masculinity has evolved over the years from Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity to Anderson’s inclusive masculinity theory. Though societal perceptions and representations of masculinity prescribe men how to construct their subjective masculinities, these perceptions may vary in the local and global culture. While local culture can be limiting, the global can provide alternative contexts for men, especially for gay men whose sexual identity is thought to inherently violate the assumptions of their gender identity. In this seminar, Yasin will describe his mixed methods research into masculinities in Turkey relating his findings to the larger global context. He will also discuss the implications for the wellbeing of stigmatised social groups, and encourage discussion of how similar social psychological research can inform social work research and practice. ____________________________________ This seminar can be joined remotely by logging on to: https://adobeconnect.sussex.ac.uk/cswir_koc A recording of this event will be available to view retrospectively at: www.sussex.ac.uk/socialwork/seminarseries
