DESCRIPTION:
The faculty in French are committed to helping their majors attain a high degree of skill in the five areas of
language usage: speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural understanding. With the increasing
globalization of activity in all areas of public life, the importance for our students of entering the work force
with a command of at least one foreign language cannot be doubted. French stands out among the available
options by virtue of its importance in the fields of medicine, technology, diplomacy, and finance, among
others, as well as by the interest which its distinctive cachet continues to inspire in beginning learners of
the language. By developing our students' skills in each of the five areas, we are preparing them to succeed
in the greatest possible variety of situations where French may be required, including our traditional mission
of preparing many students to pursue careers as secondary and college-level teachers of French. (link to

III. Additional College Requirements (6-20 units)
A. College Breadth Requirement (6 credits): Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college
shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, two courses that are outside the
departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill Core
Curriculum requirements.
B. Foreign Language (0-14 units): Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be
accomplished through one of five options: 1) complete FREN 212 – Second Year French II, along
with all appropriate pre-requisites; 2) demonstrate French proficiency through placement
examination or other means through the Department of World Languages and Literatures; 3) show
transcript evidence of successful completion of a fourth-year high school course in French; or 4)
participate in a studies abroad program preapproved by the college to meet the French foreign
language requirement.
IV. Major Requirements (28-30 units)
At least 12 of these units must be completed on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
