Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. Windows Server Administrators in the Critical Systems group of Computing and Telecommunications are responsible for the planning, purchase, deployment, and operation of the university’s computer server systems that use Windows based server operating systems. These systems currently make up the majority of the server systems operated by Computing and Telecommunications and provide a wide variety of centralized computing resources to the entire campus community. Windows Server Administrators report to the Manager of Critical Systems. Level of expertise, independent action and duties vary from one level of administrator to the next. Range 1 The Assistant Windows Server Administrator is an entry level position for individuals with experience in an Enterprise or University computing environment but without significant experience managing Windows server systems independently. An Assistant Windows Server Administrator works under the guidance of a Windows Server Administrator with the goal of becoming experienced with Windows server management best practices. Range 2 The Windows Server Administrator is responsible for configuring, ordering, deploying, and maintaining Windows server systems residing in Computing & Telecommunications server rooms. The Windows Server Administrator will also direct the technical activities of Assistant Windows Server Administrators. Range 3 The Senior Windows Server Administrator has all the technical responsibilities of a Windows Server Administrator but possesses a far greater personal knowledgebase of server systems and their underlying technologies and thereby acts as a technical resource for others. Range 4 The Windows Server Enterprise Architect is the senior technical position within the Windows Server Administrator group, and as such this individual provides technical leadership in all areas of Windows Enterprise server systems including strategic planning. 2. The Windows server component of the Critical Systems group within Computing and Telecommunications provides essential computing services to the entire university community. These services include, but are not limited to, email, file storage, the university’s online web presence, telephony, and numerous important application servers (bookstore, OneCard, door security, parking, etc.). An outage of any of these services is at once both immediately noticed and immediately impacts the university’s ability to conduct business and educate students. Thus Windows server administrators must always be prepared to take whatever initiative deemed appropriate to ensure high availability of all services Critical Systems provides to the campus. Range 1 – Assistant Windows Server Administrator The incumbent must be flexible and work independently but with direct technical supervision and with some latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Range 2 – Windows Server Administrator The incumbent must be flexible and work independently under limited technical supervision and with increased latitude for initiative and independent judgment with some influence on the work of others. Range 3 – Senior Windows Server Administrator The incumbent must be flexible and work independently under minimal technical supervision and with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment with influence on the work of others. Range 4 – Windows Server Enterprise Architect The incumbent must be flexible and work independently without technical supervision and with complete latitude for initiative and independent judgment with influence on the strategic direction of the unit. 4.
