1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Vice Provost for Graduate Education/Dean of the Graduate School reports directly to the
Executive Vice President and Provost and serves as the academic and administrative officer of the
Graduate School. The position provides leadership to (1) promote excellence in graduate education,
(2) direct and coordinate services for graduate programs, faculty, and students related to graduate
admissions, recruitment, progression, graduate assistantship hiring, and graduation, and (3)
contribute to the development and enhancement of graduate education regionally, nationally, and
internationally. The Graduate School is the primary office on campus through which academic
progress of all graduate students is monitored, evaluated, and recorded. The position act as a liaison
with Human Resources, the VPRI Office, and the Cashier’s office to assist with graduate assistantship
matters.

65% - Graduate School Operations – Strategic Planning, Staff Supervision, Fiscal Planning and
Management and Student/Advisor Conflict Resolution
 Develop, articulate, and implement the strategic plan for the Graduate School
 Advocate for graduate education, working in collaboration with deans, faculty and departments
to develop new graduate programs; participating in graduate program reviews
 Administer award programs to recognize and reward excellent graduate students
 Develop fund-raising efforts,
 Assist departments in the promotion of their graduate degree programs and student
recruitment
 Work with the Graduate Council to develop, review, and revise graduate-education policies
 Direct and coordinate services for graduate programs, faculty, and students with respect to
admission, recruitment, progression, graduation
 Provide oversight of interdisciplinary graduate programs
 Resolve problems with graduate students and faculty related to informal and formal appeals
and grievances
 Conduct seminars and workshops for students, faculty and staff on policies and procedures for
graduate education, managing the academic progress, and funding of students
 Streamline administrative processes and procedures where possible
 Approve graduate courses offered through Extended Studies and Study Abroad
 Participate in professional organizations devoted to graduate education to both enhance
visibility of the University and to continue professional development
 Provide oversight for the distribution of centrally funded graduate assistantship

 Work with graduate program directors and college personnel to develop, implement, and
enforce academic policies governing graduate students
 Work with graduate program directors on curricular development activities that impact
graduate education, including assisting faculty in developing and implementing new graduateprogram offerings and new modalities of graduate education such as on-line education
 Work with the Office of Institutional Research to collect and provide institutional date related
to graduate programs undergoing external review, as well as annual data for programassessment purposes

Analyze institutional needs related to graduate students in general, graduate teaching, and
graduate-research assistants to promote nationally competitive graduate programs
Promote strategies for graduate recruitment and retention that increase the quality and
diversity of matriculating graduate students
Liaison with the Offices of Student Conduct and Legal Affairs on academic integrity and any
legal issues related to graduate education and related faculty/student grievances
Serve as the institutional Dean for the interdisciplinary graduate programs
Other duties as assigned
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Vice Provost/Dean has authority and responsibility to oversee the Graduate School and
administer all activities and programs within the Graduate School. The Vice Provost/Dean works
closely with the Provost to develop short and long term goals for the school and consults with Provost
on policy issues and programmatic challenges. The Vice Provost/Dean manages the budget and
personnel within the Graduate School.
Impact:
All decisions and judgments made by the position, as well as the result of work performed, impact the
Graduate School through: (a) the implementation of graduate education through recruitment efforts,
admission decisions, student probation, and dismissal actions, (b) implementation of graduateeducation policies formulated by Graduate Council, and (c) strategic planning related to advancing
graduate education. Failure to perform impacts graduate student enrollment, progress toward degree
completion and advanced degrees earned.
