1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs leads, directs and oversees activities in support of faculty affairs at
the University of Nevada, Reno (University). The individual reports to and advises the Executive Vice
President and Provost on the activities of the University that support faculty hiring, employment, and
development. The position serves as the main appointing authority/signature authority for the
academic divisions of the university, including approvals on faculty searches, waivers, and salaries as
well as budget, hosting, travel, and purchasing. The individual also oversees the processes regarding
faculty development. The Vice Provost is the administration’s liaison on issues regarding risk
management, faculty reconsiderations and grievances, litigation, mediation, and settlement,
collaborating with representatives of HR/BCN and General Counsel to resolve personnel issues and
interpret and enforce university policy. In the event of a trial, settlement conference, mediation, or
hearing, the Vice Provost attends with settlement authority. The Vice Provost serves as the provost
office representative on the various university-wide committees. The position also oversees the
institution’s Equal Opportunity and Title IX office.

40% - Faculty Personnel Administration and Signature Authority
 Reviews and signs documents assigned to the Vice Provost in the University Administrative
Manual (UAM) or delegated by President or Executive Vice President and Provost
 Serves as approval authority for all faculty searches, waivers, exceptions
 Serves as the provost office contact regarding faculty employment, including hiring, contract
terms, retirement, leaves, and other requests requiring provost approval
 Works with Human Resources to analyze faculty salary issues
 Chairs the University Administrative Manual Committee
 Serves as the Provost Office representative on the Administrative Faculty Salary Placement
Committee
 Reviews and signs documents assigned to the vice Provost in the UAM or delegated by
President or Executive Vice President and Provost
30% - Faculty/Employee Relations
 Serves as the university point of contact on issues regarding risk management, faculty
reconsiderations and grievances, Chapter 6 hearings, litigation, mediation, and settlement
 Represents office at internal and external meetings, hearings, conferences, and trials with
settlement authority
 Mediates and resolves faculty personnel issues
 Supervises EEO/Title IX program
 Serves as approval authority for office on all university forms requiring dean/VP approval
 Reviews all resolution letters before they are sent to the parties
15% - Faculty Support and Development
 Plans and implements education workshops and orientations for faculty, including leadership
training
 Administers faculty sabbatical application process and emeritus approval process

Administers faculty awards and grant processes, including but not limited to Regents’ teaching
award, university and Regents’ advising awards, Tibbitts Award, Instructional Enhancement
Grants, and International Activities Grants
15% - University Space and Other Special Projects
 Chairs the Facilities Resource Committee and serves as the point of contact on issues
regarding assignment and use of university space
 Advises President and Executive Vice President & Provost on issues regard university space
 Serves as the Provost Office representative on the Real Estate Committee
 Serves as signature authority as defined in the University Administrative Manual and/or as
delegated
 Complete other projects as assigned
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs acts independently to support the University’s faculty by directing
and participating in many activities related to support and oversight of faculty as well as continuous
review and improvement. General objectives and priorities are established by the President and
Provost. The Vice Provost’s activities focus on furthering the University’s objectives and priorities by
gaining the support and cooperation of the university’s colleges, departments, and divisions. In
addition, the Vice Provost independently works with external organizations and individuals related to
faculty affairs, bringing back information and ideas that will inform the administration for the
university’s planning and priorities and serving as the university’s representative.
Impact:
The Vice Provost reviews and approves documents related to faculty activities, ensuring compliance
with University, Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), and State of Nevada policy. The
activities performed by the Vice Provost in the area of faculty development improve the quality of the
University’s faculty and their professional growth and development. The Vice Provost’s involvement in
matters relating to personnel behavior, risk management, litigation, and settlement ensures that the
University is effectively represented in these matters and is protected in the future. Administrators,
faculty and staff rely on information provided by the Vice Provost in order to accomplish objectives in
an expedient manner in accordance with University, NSHE, and State of Nevada rules and
regulations.

Doctoral Degree and be a tenured faculty member with five or more years of university
or higher education experience that includes personnel management and faculty
development experience; evidence of leadership in departmental and university
administration, such as service on university committees, faculty senate, chair of a
departmental or college committees, or previous administrative position
