1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Staff Pharmacist licensed by the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy and appointed in the
Department of Pharmacology interprets and evaluates prescription orders; compounds, dispenses
and labels drugs and devices as indicated on a prescription; and, participates in drug selection and
drug utilization reviews. The position maintains proper and safe storage of drugs and devices and
offers or performs services, operations, or transactions necessary in conducting, operating, managing
and controlling a pharmacy. It is the Pharmacist’s legal responsibility to oversee the actions of all
auxiliary personnel used to assist the pharmacist in any of his/her duties. The position reports to the
Manager, Pharmacy.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
A Pharmacist’s accurate and complete performance of the job duties associated with this position is
crucial to patient health. The incumbent may be the only pharmacist on duty and thus is ultimately
responsible for patient safety. The incumbent consults with the Manager on long-term goals and
strategies for the unit but must operate independently under pharmacy license.

Impact:
Failure to perform as expected could result in substandard patient care and cause possible harm to a
patient, including death or disability
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Rules and regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Nevada State Board
of Pharmacy and reporting of errors, omissions and unwanted vs. harmful effects of drugs on
patients.
 The actions, both therapeutic and unwanted, of drugs in and on the human body.
 The physical layout and security system needs for the UNR pharmacy as mandated by
Nevada State Pharmacy Law
 Supervisory practices and techniques
 Federal and State Medicaid/Medicare rules and regulations
 Experience in retail and institutional practices
Skills:
 Perform traditional duties of a pharmacist (preparation, dispensing, and counseling in regard to
appropriate dosage forms) as outlined by Nevada State Board of Pharmacy and state of the
art practices
 Use of the literature and meta analyses to stay informed of the nature of new drugs and new
drug information.
 Supervisory skills
Ability to:
 Monitor patient’s symptoms and response to medication
 Conduct drug utilization reviews
 Recommend appropriate drug therapy to practitioners
 Assist in establishing, executing, tabulating, and evaluating clinical studies regarding drugs
